A point in St. Martin's bay, Mackinac county, 15 miles north of Mackinac island.


SALEM.


A station on the D., L. & N. R. R., in the township of Salem, northeast corner of Washtenaw county, 143 miles northeast of Ann Arbor, and 29 west of Detroit. It was settled in 1829 and formerly known as Summit. Population, 100. Lumber and feed are manufactured, and wheat, oats fruit and lumber are exported. Of the former, 40,000 bushels were exported in 1880. Nearest bank at Plymouth, distant

SALINE.


A prosperous village of 1,100 inhabit . ants, is situated upon the river from which it takes its name, in Saline township. Washtenaw county, and is an important point on the D .. H. & S. W. R. R., 11 miles southwest of Ypsilanti, 41 from De- troit, and 9 south of Ann Arbor. Saline was settled in 1824, and received a village charter in 1864. It is surrounded by a beautiful farming country, well settled and improved, the best lands commanding from $70 to $90 per acre. The village contains Baptist, Methodist. Lutheran and Presbyterian churches, a large Union school building, a foundry, 3 flouring mills, a weekly newspaper, the Standard, and several stores, general and exclusive. 19 miles east of Bad Axe, the county scat. The recently constructed P. H. & N. W. Ry makes its present northern terminus here, giving the village a direct outlet by rail. It has Baptist and Methodist Episco- pal churches, a graded school .. manufacto- ries of salt, flour, lumber, a planing mill. grain elevator, a private bank, 2 hotels and several stores and shops. SANDERS' FISHERY.


Quite an extensive fishery and settle- ment of 20 persons, on Green bay. in Ford River township. Delta county. The place. also known as Rocky Point, is 34 miles below Escanaba, the county seat, and in daily connection by stage with Ford River.

SAND HILL.


A postoffice on the daily mail route from Beech, a station on the D. L. & N. R. R., to Farmington, 3 miles north of the former station. It is in Redford township. Wayne county, 15 miles northwest of Detroit.


SAND LAKE.


A rising village and station, on the G. R. & I. R. R., in Nelson township, near the northern line of Kent county. It is 25 miles north of Grand Rapids, and ? south of Howard City, via which and the D .. L. & N. R. R. it is 86 miles northwest of Lan- sing and. 171 from Detroit. The village was settled in 1868, and incorporated in January, 1879. It has a population of 700, is beautifully situated on the lake from which it takes its name, and is large- ly devoted to the lumber and shingle inter ests. There are 5 saw-mills, 3 shingle mills, a hotel, 3 churches. Adventist. Con- gregational and Methodist, a graded school and several stores. general and special. Freight shipped during the past year, chiefly lumber and shingles, 2.000 tons. The soil in the vicinity is mostly a rich clay loam, unsurpassed for agriculture. Saginaw county, a station on the S. V. and St. L. R. R., 124 miles west of East Saginaw.


SANDS.


A station on the C. & N. W. Rv, 15 miles south of Marquette, and 9 north of Forsyth. It is in Chocolay township, east- ern part of Marquette county. The vil- lage, which claims 100 inhabitants, lies about a mile back from the station. Thomas O'Connell, postinaster.

SANDUSKY.


The new seat of justice of Sanilac county, is situated in the township of Watertown, central part of the county, 8 miles west of Carsonville station, on the P. H. & N. W. Ry, 46 miles northwest of Port Huron and 24 northwest of Lex- ington, the former county seat. The vil- lage was settled in 1879, and has a popula- tion of 120. Pine and hardwood timber abound in the vicinity, and timber and hoops are the chief exports. Farming land is valued at from $5 to $20 per acre. The place at present has no manu- facturing; contains 2 stores. 3 hotels and a weekly paper, the Sandusky Neck. Stage io Carsonville daily; fare, 50 cents. C. J. French, postmaster.

SARANAC.


Was settled as early as 1837, but it was not until about 1851 that the place began to make any considerable advancement. It became a point on the D. & M. Ry in 1857, was incorporated in 1868, and now has a population of about 900. The village itself is free from debt. but there is on out- standing school district bonded debt of $4,000. $2,000, payable in February of each year. It has five churches. Baptist. Congregational, Episcopal, Free Methodist and Methodist Episcopal, a graded school, a bank and a good weekly newspa- per, the Suranne Local. Manufacturing is represented by two flour mills, a cheese fac- tory, 2 saw-mills, a stave factory, planing mill. oar factory and tannery, the products of which, with general farm produce. form the exports. Mail. daily by rail, and by stage semi-weekly south to South Cass; fare, $1. Saranac is located on Grand river, in Bos- ton township.
