A postoffice in the extreme eastern part of Charlevoix county. It is on the tri. weekly mail route from Petoskey south- east to Gaylord, about 18 miles from either place.


SPRINGVILLE.


Was settled in 1832, and has a popul: tion of 130. It is in Cambridge township. Lenawee county, 15 miles northwest of Adrian, and is on the tri-weekly stage route from Tecumseh northwest to Brook lyn, 11 miles from the former and S from the latter place; fares, respectively, 25 and 50 cents. An important station on the Mackinaw Div. of the M. C. R. R., is located on the middle branch of Pine river, in Lincoln township, Bay county, 5 miles back from the shore of Saginaw bay. 29 north of Bay City, and 137 above Detroit. It is a place of about 400 inhabitants, and is the base of supplies by rail for the lake shore counties north of Saginaw bay, Iosco, Alcona, Al- pena and Presque Isle. The village has 3 churches, Catholic. Congregational and Methodist, and a Union school. Hoops, lumber, shingles and telegraph poles are exported. The county seat of Montealm county, is an incorporated village of 1,800 inhabit- ants, settled in Jannary, 1862, and char- tered in 1869. It is on the Stanton Br. of the D., L. & N. R. R., 24 miles north of Ionia, 61 from Lansing, and 1446 from De. troit. The village presents many points of interest, bas 4 churches, Baptist, Catholic. Congregational and Methodist, a good Union school building, a bank and 3 news.

There are 4 hotels, 2 of which are first- class, several large business blocks, and a number of handsome dwellings. A beauti- ful court house, just completed, cost $25. - 000. Immense quantities of lumber and shingles are shipped from this point, it be- ing headquarters for 2 saw-mills, 4 shingle mills and 4 planing mills in the village proper, and 50. saw and shingle mills within a radius of ? miles. Bonded in- debtedness, $10.000. The soil in the vicin- ity is a light sandy loam, and for farming purposes commands from $10 to $40 per acre. There are ? churches, Free Methodist and United Brethren, and a district school in the neigh- borhood.


STRONACH.


A village on the Little Manistee river. located as a settlement in 1868. It is in the township of Stronach, Manistee county. 5 miles southeast of Manistee village, with which it is connected by a semi-weekly mail stage line. Ludington, the nearest railroad point at present, is 34 miles south. A branch of the F. & P. MI. Ry, now con- structing, will make Stronach a station during the summer of ISS1.
