SKANEE.


Settled in 1871, in Arvon township, Bs- raga county,' lake Superior, is a village of 125 population and the location of impor- tant wood and timber interests. It has a Lutheran church and district school. Dis- tance from L'Anse, its nearest railroad point, 18 miles. The place is on Ravine river, near its outlet into Huron bay, which forms an excellent natural harbor, with a coast line of 25 miles. Mail by stage from L'Anse tri-weekly. Lies on the shore of lake Michigan, 1 mile south of Frankfort and 60 north of


Ludington. It was settled in 1867. and is in Gilmore township. Benzie county, 9 miles west of Benzoria, the county seat. Population, 500. The blast furnace of the Frankfort Furnace Co. is located here, and is the most important industry. It gives employment to over 100 men, and con- sumes 10.000 cords of wood yearly. Lum- ber and broom handles are also manufac- tured. Banks, Hannah, Lav & Co., Trav- erse City, and City Bank, Manistee. Michigan, at the mouth of Black river, which forms a safe and capacious harbor for shipping. It is in the township of South Haven, northwest corner of Van Buren county, and is the western terminus of the South Haven Div. M. C. R. R., by which it is 40 miles west of Kalamazoo and 180 west of Detroit. Paw Paw, the county seat, is 30 miles distant, and Chicago by water 80 miles southwest. Among the prominent features of the place are Baptist, Catholic, Congregational, Dutch Reform and Methodist churches, a national bank with a capital of $50,000, two weekly news- papers, the Record (independent), and Sen- tinel (Republican), 2 graded public schools, & township library of 400 volumes, an opera house seating 600, and manufactories of fruit baskets, flour, lumber and wooden ware, which, with fruit, leather and tan- bark, are the leading items of export.
