SOUTH MANITOU ..


Is situated on South Manitou island, one of the group forming the county of Man! tou, in the northern part of lake Michi gan. St. James, the county seat, is 40 miles northeast. The settlement ws formed in 1860, and now contains about 120 inhabitants, who are chiefly engaged in farming. It has a store, wood dock and some other small interests, but at present is without church and school accommod tions. A lighthouse is maintained here Mail, by special supply, twice a week from Glen Arbor, 12 miles distant. Shipments grain, potatoes, wood, cattle and fish Richard Kitchen, postmaster.

A rural postoffice in the township of Riley, Clinton county, 12 miles southwest of St. Johns, the county scat, and 15, tiq. De Witt, northwest of Lansing, whence it receives a semi-weekly mail by stage. Settled 1857. A. E. Jones, postmaster.


SOUTH ROCKWOOD.


Is located on the Huron river, at the point where it is crossed by the L. S. & HI. S. and C. S. railways, directly opposite Rockwood, in the township of Berlin, Monroe county. It is 13 miles above Mon- roe, the county seat, and 23 South of De- troit. Lumber, flour, staves, heading and charcoal are manufactured, and with grain and wood form the exports. It has a Union church and a fine large brick school house. The village was settled in 1862. Population, 250. Express, American and United States. Telegraph, Western Union. Mail, daily. A pleasant incorporated village of 1,400 population, located on Grand river, : miles above Grand Haven. It is in Spring Lake township, Ottawa county, and is a rising station on the D., G. H. & M. Ry. from which considerable shipments of lumber, washboards, fruit and berries are annually made. Two steam yachts make several round trips daily between Grand Haven and Fruitport (the latter 3 miles above), touching here each way. The village contains 8 saw-mills, a planing mill. washboard factory, 3 hotels, a graded school, with 7 teachers, a library of 5(+) books, Baptist. Catholic, Reform, Metho- dist and Presbyterian churches, has a pros- perous horticultural society, and a weekly newspaper, the Republican. Assessed valu. ation, $217,670. It is also noted as a sani. tarium, a valuable mineral spring being one of its features.
