PORTLAND.

An incorporated village of 1,800 inhab- itants on the D., L. & N. R. R., at the confluence of the Grand and Looking Glass rivers, in Portland township, lonia county, 14 miles southeast of Ionia court house, 23 northwest of Lansing, and 108 from De- troit. It was settled in 1834 and received a village charter in 1869. Portland is free from debt, has 6 churches of as many de- nominations, 3 good public schools, 2 pri- vate banks, 2 hotels, a weekly newspaper, the Observer (independent), and a nunuber

of good stores. It has excellent water power, utilized by 2 flouring mills and a woolen factory. Disastrous fires occurred here in November, 1879, and February, 1880, by which a large portion of the build- ings on the principal street were destroyed. These have been replaced by substantial brick structures. The surrounding coun- try consists of fine farming land well adapted to the culture of wheat. Ship- ments, flour, grain and wool. Mail, daily. Express, American. Telegraph, D., L. & N. R. R. Co's and Atlantic & Pacific. Wm. Root, postmaster.
