VICKSBURGH.


An incorporated village, with a popula- tion of 900, located at the intersection of the C. & G. T. Ry, and the G. R. & I. R. R., in the townships of Schoolcraft and Brady, southern part of Kalamazoo county. It is 13 miles south of Kalama- zuo, the judicial seat, 23 southwest of Bat- tle Creek, 62 south of Grand Rapids, and 144 west of Detroit. Its location on the Portage river, which here affords excellent Water power; together with its superior railroad facilities, combine to make Vicks- burgh an excellent manufacturing center. Its present industries are a flouring mill, saw-mill and planing mill. A large busi- ness grows out of its relations with the surrounding country, which consists of prairie lands and oak openings under a high state of cultivation. The shipments, largely of farm products, by the C. & G. T. Ry, alone, in 1879, were 14,874 tons. The place has Methodist Episcopal and Congregational churches, a large Union school house, 2 hotels, 1 recently erected, a neat public hall and weekly newspaper, the Monitor.
