TECUMSEH.

One of the oldest and most prosperous towns in southern Michigan, is located on the river Raisin, in a fertile, undulating country, covered with finely improved farms. Grain and fruits of various kinds are extensively cultivated, and blooded horses and cattle of superior grades are raised. The river affords excellent water power, driving 2 flouring mills and a saw- mill, besides which there are manufactor- ies of paper, leather, bent wood, chairs, engines, brick, sash and doors, etc. Among the public and social features of the place are 6 churches, Baptist, Methodist, Epis- copal, Presbyterian, Friends and Univer- salist. A. fine high-school building and 3 ward schools, employing in the aggregate 19 teachers; a fine opera house, seating 1,000; a live weekly newspaper, the Her- ald; water works and a fire department, with a good steam fire engine.

Sink's Hotel has been refitted and refur- nished throughout, at a cost of over $5,- 000, and is an unusually good house.

Freights, embracing lumber. flour, pork, wheat, apples and general merchandise, aggregating 11,117 tons, were shipped in

1879. The town is clear of debt, and has an assessed valuation, real and personal, of $1,265,325. There are splendid openings for various business ventures here, owing to the rich and thriving country surround- ing it, and the fact that a large portion of the products seek a market at this point. Among the enterprises- that would prove remunerative are a cheese factory, a pork packing establishment and a fruit dryer and evaporator.

Tecumseh is situated in the township bearing its name, in the northeastern part of Lenawee county. It was first settled in 1823, and received a village charter in 183 ;, until which time it was the county seat, an honor since held by Adrian. The Jackson Br. of the L. S. & M. S. Ry, with its vari- ous connections, affords communication with all parts of the State, the distance to Detroit being 68 miles, to Jackson 33, to Adrian 13, to Toledo 37. Stage to Brook- lyn, 20 miles, tri-weekly: fare, $1. Tele- graph, Western Union. Express, United States. Edgar A. Tribou, postmaster.
