F"For a number of years the judicial seat of the county of St. Clair, is located at the confluence of the Pine with the St. Clair river, 32 miles above Mt. Clemens, 56 northeast of Detroit and 12 south of Port Iluron, the present county seat. The first
steps toward the location of a settlemert here were taken by Thomas Palmer, of Detroit, in 1828, the valuable pine tim- ber in the surrounding country inducing him to locate a saw-mill and lumber camp here, soon after which a village was pla'- ted and named Palmer, which was suhse- quently changed to St. Clair. In 1858 i: became incorporated as a city. and, at the present time, it has a population of 2,00). Prominent among the industrial interests of the place are a large woolen mill, foun- dry and machine shop, planing mill, sash. door and blind factory, stave factory. hub and spoke factory, brick yards, flouring and saw-mills. The extensive tannery of W. D. Sheldon ships annually leather to the value of $60,000. Vessel building is also a feature bere. A mineral spring sim ilar to that at Mt. Clemens, but stronger in iron, discharging 80 barrels of water daily. is attracting considerable attention. and the proprietors design the erection of : large hotel and baths during the present year. There are 5 churches, 2 public school buildings costing $10,000, a bank and a newspaper, the Republican, originally es- tablished in 1834. Included with the vari- ous manufactures, grain and hav are largely shipped, of the latter, 2,000 tons were exported in 1880. Farming laad ic the vicinity ranges in value from $30 to $100 per acre. During close of navigation stages run to Marine City and Port Huron daily; fare 25 and 50 cents respectively. St. Clair is the eastern terminus of the Michigan Midland R. R., which connects by ferry with the C. S. Ry, at Court- wright, on the Canadian side of the river. one mile distant. Telegraph. Western Union and American Union. Express. Canadian. R. H.
