RIVERSIDE.


Forming a suburb of Detroit, is an in- corporated village in the towoship of Springwells, Wayne county. It includes an extensive dry dock and ship yard, one of the largest steam forges in the West, at mammoth tannery, copper smelling works, and other manufacturing establishments. RIVERSIDE.

ROCHESTER.

An incorporated village of 1,200 inhab- 'tants, in Arvon township, Oakland county, at the confluence of Paint and Stony creeks with the Clinton river, and at the intersection of the Michigan Air Line Ry and D. & B. C. R. R., It is 10 miles northeast of Pontiac, the county seat, with which it will be connected by the T., A. A. & N. R. R., now being constructed. Distance to Port Huron, northwest, 47 miles; to Detroit, south. 31. The village contains 5 churches, Advent. Baptist, Con- gregational, Methodist and Universalist, a graded school, Masonic, Odd Fellowsand Good Templar lodges, and two newspa- pers, the Spectator and Era, both indepen- dent in politics; the former, established in 1873, has a circulation of over 500, and is a good advertising medium. Its manufac- tures are varied. embracing 2 paper mills, operated by water power, turning out 750 tons of book, printing and wrapping paper annually: the mills of F. A. Blackmer manufacture 400 tons of wrapping paper per annum. A woolen mill has a capacity of 100,000 pounds of yarn a year, and socks, etc., to the value of $60.000. A

At the mouth of Allen's creek, on the shore of lake Huron, is a small settlement in Sand Beach township, Huron county. 20 miles due cast of Bad Axe court house. and on the daily mail stage route from Port Huron to Port Austin. Lumber and shingles are the only exports. It has no postòtlice.


ROCKFORD


Is situated on the Rouge river, and is s prominent town on the G. R. & I. R. R .. in Algoma township. Kent county. It is 14 miles north of Grand Rapids, in the center of a rich agricultural district, and has quite extensive manufacturing and commercial interests, represented by a bank, newspaper, the Register. foundry. machine shop. flouring mill, planing mill. wagon factory. and several stores. It has Methodist, Baptist and Congregations! churches and a Spiritualist society, a large and handsome brick school building, and 2 new hotels. Wheat, wool, fruits, pois. toes, flour and lumber are shipped. Rock- ford was settled in 1843, and incorporated

A mining village of perhaps 700 inhabi- tants in the mineral range of lake Supe- rior. It is in Rockland township, Onton- agon county, 31 miles west of L'Anse and 12 southeast of Ontonagon, the county sent. Several copper mines are in the im mediate vicinity, and copper forms the only exports. L'Anse is the shipping point. The village has Catholic and Methodist churches, a public school and several shops and stores. The nearest bank is at Houghton, by stage 79 miles

A settlement was formed here in 1869, and it became an incorpo- rated village in March, 1872. The popu- lation now numbers 500. Lumber, flour, shingles, lath, lime and castings are manu- factured. There are 2 Lutheran churches, a good Union school and a weekly news- paper, the Presque Isle County Advance. Land in the vicinity from $5 to $10 per acre. In Rollin township, Lenawee county. has a population of perhaps 250, and is lo- cated ou Bean creek, 22 miles west of Adrian, the county seat. It is on the daily mail stage line from Addison 6 miles north. to Hudson 5 miles south, the latter its shipping point, via the L. S. & M. S. Ry. Butter, cheese, grain and live stock are exported. G. A prosperous village of 1,800 inhabit- ants, is situated on the Michigan Air Line Ry, now in operation to Pontiac, 22 miles southwest. Romeo is 10 miles northeast of Rochester, 14 west of Ridgeway, and 40 north of Detroit, on the line between Bruce and Washington townships, 20 miles from Mt. Clemens, the county seat. It is located in a splendid farming region, and is well known to the sporting world through its annual and well-attended horse fairs. The public buildings consist of a central union and 2 primary school build- ings, and Methodist. Christian, Congrega- tional, Episcopal, Baptist and Lutheran churches. Two weekly newspapers, the Observer and the Democrat, are published here. There are also 2 national banks, with a combined capital of $200,000, and 2 good hotels. The leading shipments consist of flour, grain, apples, carriages, potatoes, etc. The village was platted in 1824, incorporated 1838, and secured an outlet by railroad in 1870.
