STURGIS.
One of the most flourishing villages of St. Joseph county. is located at the cross- ing of the G. R. & I: R. R. and the L. S. & M. S. Ry, in the township of Sturgis, and southeastern part of the county. By the formuer road it is 13 miles southeast of Cen- terville, 85 south of Grand Rapids and 57 above Fort Wayne, Ind., and by the latter 24 miles west of Coldwater and 144 from Detroit. The settlement was formed in 1827 by John Sturgis, a Quaker from Phil- adelphia. and became incorporated in 1855. The population now numbers 2.060. It has ? churches, Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, German Reformed. Methodist, Presbyterian and Spiritualist. Excellent
school accommodations, 2 libraries, having 125 and 750 volumes, respectively. Amone the principal buildings are the school build- ing, Odd Fellows' hall, and the Elliott House. There are 3 weekly newspapers. the Journal, National Greenback and Stur. giser Zeitung, and a number of manufac- tories of flour, lumber, furniture, churns, pumps, wind mills, sash, doors, blinds. etc., besides a foundry and an Alden fruit drying establishment. The village is assessed at a valuation of $300,000. and has, including the school district, a bonded debt of $8,500. The streets are wide and lined with beautiful shade trees, and the surrounding country is one of the finest agricultural portions of the State, im- proved farms commanding $100 per acre. Mail, daily. A postoffice and settlement on the Man- istee river, in Brown township, Manistee county. It is on the weekly mail route from Manistee, the county seat 25 miles southwest, to Sherman, the seat of Wex- ford county 23 miles northeast.

Was located as a settlement in 1860, in Hinton township. Mecosta county, 23 miles southeast of Big Rapids, the county seat. 50 north of Ionia, and 13 northeast of Mor- ley, on the G. R. & I. R. R., its railroad point, which is reached by stage tri-weekly. It has an Adventist church, district school and steam saw-mill. Farm products and lumber are shipped. Wants a hotel and barnessmaker. TALLMADGE.
Also known as Sand Creek, is a village of 15 population, in Tallmadge township. Ottawa county, located on Grand river, 18: miles southeast of Coopersville, on the D., G. II. & M. Ry, receiving therefrom a semi-weekly mail by stage. and via which Grand Haven, the county scat, is 30 miles distant. Berlin, on the same line of road. is the shipping point for Tallmadge. Grain and lumber are exported, chiefly by river. A. D. Patterson, postmaster.

TALLMAN.
A recent settlement in the eastern"part of Mason county. It is on the F. & P. M. Rv, 20 miles northeast of Ludington, and has a tri weekly mail.
TAWAS CITY.
The county seat of Iosco county, a town of 900 population, is pleasantly located at the mouth of the Tawas river. It is in Tawas township, on the indentation of Saginaw bay known as Tawas bay, and which is claimed to be the best harbor on lake Huron. A settlement was established here in 1854 as a center for the extensive lumbering operations carried on in the vicinity. It is 38 miles northeast of Stau- dish, 55 by water or 67 via Standish from Bay City, and 165 north of Detroit. It is the northern terminus of the Tawas & Bay County R. R. narrow gauge, which extends from this point 25 miles southwesterly. designed to connect with the M. Div. M. C. R. R .. 12 miles distant. During the season of navigation two steamers arrive daily from Alpena, and one from Bay City. Lumber, shingles, long timber, lath, cedar posts, salt and fish form the shipments. The village has a number of large saw- mills, a salt block with a capacity of 200 barrels a day, a good hotel, court house, several business blocks, 2 churches, Con- gregational and Methodist, a large graded public school, a town library, a weekly newspaper, the Gazette, a good hotel and several general and special stores. The county house, or poor farm, is 4 miles from the village and is in a prosperous
