WYANDOTTE.


Lies on the Detroit river. 12 miles below the city of Detroit, in the township of Ecorces. Wayne county. It was platted by the Eureka Iron Company in 1854. who at that time established a blast furnace here. In 1867 it became incorporated as a city, and in 1880 the population numbered 3,700. In addition to the transportation facilities afforded by the river, the town has depots of the C. S. and L. S. & M. S. railways, via which it is 23 miles north of Monroe, 48 north of Toledo. O., and 88 east of Jackson. A number of important manufacturing enterprises are carried on. among which are an extensive silver smelting and refining works, large iron works, a shipyard for the construction of iron vessels, a planing and a flour mill, 2 bending works, 2 wash, door and blind fac-


tories, a brewery, a broom factory and a basket manufactory. It also has a savings bank, with a capital of $50.000, a good hotel and 2 weekly newspapers, the Wayne County Courier and the Herald. The religious and educational advantages are afforded by Methodist. Presbyterian, Episcopal, 2 Lutheran and ? Catholic churches, 1 large brick Union school building and 2 ward schools. The city possesses the nucleus of a library contain- ing at present 300 volumes. Arrangements are being perfected for the construction of a new city hall, which will be a prominent feature. The shipments comprise flour. farm products, iron, lumber. bent wood. woolen dusters, baskets and a variety of other goods. the products of its several manufactories. One of the attractions of the place is its sulphur springs, which are popular as a resort for invalids and others. The soil in the vicinity consists of a black sandy loam, rich and well adapted to the culture of grain, grass and fruit. It ranges in value from $200 to $300 per acre. Tel- egraph, Western Union.
