PORTAGE ENTRY.
A small settlement on Keweenaw bay. at mouth of the Portage river, 16 miles north of L'Anse, and about the same dis- tance southeast of Houghton. It is in Houghton county, and is a shipping point for wood and forest products.

PORT AUSTIN.
The former county seat of Huron county, is located in the extreme northern part of the county, at the mouth of Saginaw bay, 17 miles due north of Bad Axe, the present county seat, with which it connects by a daily mail stage. It is 60 miles northeast of Bay City, 95 northwest of Port Huron, and 160 north of Detroit. Sand Beach, the present terminus of the P. H. & N. W. Ry, is 24 miles southeast. This line of road is expected to reach Port Austiu during this year (1881). The locality was settled in 1838, and the village now has about 800 inhabitants. It is in a region of country that is improving rapidly and that contains some of the finest farms in the eastern portion of the State. One of these is the extensive breeding farm of Mr. James Ryan, proprietor of the Port Austin Hotel. He has a good half mile track, on which is exercised some of the finest stock iu Michi- gan, owned by him. The place contains ? churches, a Union school, a weekly news. paper, the Huron County Mes, and 2 hotels. The county seat of St. Clair county, is situated at the foot of lake Huron and the head of St. Clair river, and is the most easterly point in Michigan. According to the census of 1850 its population is 8.992. Black river, rising in the northern part of Sanilac county, divides the city into two sections of marly equal population and business. In its early days the principal business of Port Huron was lumbering. but nearly all the pine timber along Black river and its branches has been out. and

the few mills still running obtain their sup- ply of logs from points on Lake Huron above Saginaw Bay. At the present time the principal business interests of Port Huron pertain to railroads and the lake marine. The Sarnia branch of the Great Western of Canada terminates at Sarnia, opposite the central part of the city, and the Grand Trunk has its depot and shops in the northern section. The Chicago & Grand Trunk has its depot and car shops in the southern part of the city, and the Port Huron & Northwestern (narrow gange) will locate its permanent depot im- mediately north of the C. & G. T. grounds. Eventually it is expected that all the roads will have a union depot at this point. The P. H. & N. W., owned and managed entirely by citizens of Port Huron, has a line in operation to Sand Beach, Huron Co., 70 miles north, and to Marlette, Sanilac Co., 38 miles northwest. The Marlette branch will be extended to the Saginaw valley dur- ing the year 1881. A considerable number of tugs, and many sailing vessels and barges are owned in Port Huron, and the Northern Transit company has its head- quarters in the city. There are also two dry docks within the city limits, and much vessel repairing is done in them and the ship yards adjoining. Regular lines of ferries afford communication with Sarnia, a Canadian town of 4,000 inhabitants, im- mediately opposite, and with Point Ed- ward, the Canadian terminus of the Grand Trunk railway, a mile above Sarnia. Port Huron has a telephone exchange, with a hundred subscribers; a handsome opera house; the finest postoffice and custom- house building in Michigan: 2 telegraph offices, American Union and Western Un- ion; half a dozen good hotels: water works with over a thousand water takers; 2 miles of paved streets; gas works: 9 church buiklings; 5 brick school buildings; a hand- some city hall and court house: 4 newspa- pers, the Times (Republican), published daily for 9 years and weekly since 1869. the Journal (Greenback), published daily since March, 1880, and weekly since 1875. the Commercial (Democratic), published Sundays, the oldest paper in the city, and the Call, published weekly since 1878. Port Huron has a considerable wholesale trade, which is rapidly increasing through the extension of its railroad communica- tions; and manufacturing establishments of considerable importance The construc. tion and operation of extensive car works is contemplated, and a rapid increase of
manufacturing interests is anticipated. The headquarters of the customs district of Huron, extending from lake St. Clair to Cheborgan, and including the Saginaw valley, are at Port Huron, and the busines- done is very large.
