A station on the Mackinaw Div. M. C. R. R., in Pinconning township, Bay coun- ty, 22 miles north of Bay City and 6 south of Standish. The population, numbering about 120, is chiefly employed in logging and lumbering. The exports in 1879 were 3,000,000 fect of logs, 800,000 hoops and 15 tons of produce. Bank at Bay City. WHITEFISH POINT.


Is a supply landing for the lumber camps in that section, and is noted for its fisheries and advantages as a summer re- sort. It is in Sault de Ste. Marie town- ship, Chippewa county, 40 miles distant from Sault de Ste. Marie, the'county seat, by water, and 110 from Marquette. Its exports are fresh and salt fish. Population, 59. Mail, tri-weekly. WHITEFORD CENTER.


In Whiteford township, Monroe county, is a village of 120 inhabitants, settled in 1834, and located 25 miles southwest of Monroe and 4 northeast of Ottawa Lake, its railroad point, on the L. S. & M. S. Ry, via which it is 18 miles northwest of To- ledo, Ohio. Exports, farm products. wood and staves. The place has Methodist and Lutheran societies, but no church editice. WHITEHALL.


At the head of White lake, in Whitehall township, Muskegon county, is an incor.


porated village of about 2,000 population. on the C. & W. M. R. R., 16 miles north of Muskegon and 5 miles inland from lake Michigan. Whitehall has 3 saw-mills und 4 shingle mills, and including those at Montagne (which place is just across White river), and other points on the lake, there are, in all. some 9 saw-mills and 6 shingle mills. cuttingannually 120,000,000 feet of limber. 75,000,000 shingles and 20,000,000 lath. The village has also a planing mill. a box factory, a weekly pa- per, a national bank, a large tannery and 2 hotels, the Cosmopolitan being the recog- nized headquarters for commercial men. A good graded school is maintained and the churches are 7 in number. viz: Bap- tist, Congregational, Episcopal, Catholic, Wesleyan and Episcopal Methodist and Lutheran. White lake, which is formed by the widening of White river, is about 5 miles in length and 1 mile wide, the channel being of sufficient depth to float the large lake vessels. In addition to the lumber fleet of sail vessels, Whitehall has, in common with Montague, communica- tion by steamers, about twice a week, with Chicago during the season of navigation. WHITE PIGEON.


An incorporated village of 1,200 inhab- itants in the township of White Pigeon, St. Joseph county. It is on White Pigeon creek, a tributary of the St. Joseph river, in an oak opening and prairie country, of which grain, fruit and potatoes are staple products. The market value of farms in the vicinity ranges from $50 to $100 per acre. The main line of the L. S. and M. S. Ry passes through the village, and the Kalamazoo branch of the same road di- verges from this point. By these lines it is 37 miles south of Kalamazoo. 95 south of Grand Rapids. 152 from Detroit and 120 from Chicago. Centreville, the county seat, is 12 miles northeast. White Pigeon has a large Union school, a weekly news- paper, the Journal, a public library of 500 volumes and 2 lesser ones, a public hall. 6 churches, Baptist, German Reform. Luthe- ran, Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic. 3 hotels, a bank, and several well stocked general stores. The assessed valuation of property, real and personal, for 1879. is $348.000. The shipments by rail, chietly farm products, embracing grain, fruit. potatoes and live stock. in 1879 aggregated 10,884.513 lbs. Telegraph, Western Union. Express, United States. WHITE ROCK.


This settlement was established in 1860, in White Rock township, southeast corner of Huron county. It is on the shore of lake Huron. 55 miles above Port Huron and 25 southeast of Bad Axe, the county seat. . The P. H. & N. W. Rv runs within 6 miles of the place, and Sand Beach, its present terminus, is 10 miles north. White Rock has Congregational and Methodist churches, a fine large brick schoolhouse, express and telegraph offices, and a daily mail. Salt and lumber are manufactured, and form the chief exports. Stages to Port Huron and Sand Beach daily. Population, 300. T. Thomson, postmaster.

WHITE'S STATION.


On the M. C. R. R., in Emmett town- ship, Calhoun county, is a small settle- mient of about 30 population. It is ~ miles west of Marshall, the county seat. and 6 southeast of Battle Creek. Good water power is afforded by the Kalamazoo river. Flour is the only article of manufacture. Mail, daily. John Hough, postmaster.

A discontinued postoffice in the north- eastern portion of Kent county, 26 miles north of Lowell and about 10 northwest of Kiddville, on the D., L. & N. R. R.

WHITEWOOD.


A postoffice and village of 150 popula- tion, in Hamtramck : ownship, Wayne conuty, on the Pontiac road, 5 miles from Detroit. The nearest raffred station is at Norris, three miles distant. It has an Episcopal church and tri-weekly mai !. John T. Mott, jr., postmaster.

A place of 150 inhabitants, in Northfield township. Washtenaw county, 10 miks north of Ann Arbor and S southwest of South Lyon station, on the D., L. & N. R. R. It is situated on a beautiful lake 5 miles in circumference, and is a popular place of summer resort. A steam grist and feed mill is greatly needed, and would be profitable. Bank, 1st National. AAnn Arbor. Settled 1840. Stage to Ann Ar bor and Brighton tri weekly, fare 50 cents J. D. Stevens, postmaster.

WHITTEMORE.


A settlement of 16 persons, formed in 1878, in Burleigh township, Iosco county, 14 miles a little south of west from Tawas City, the county scat. It is a station on the Tawas & Bay county R. R., and also on the Au Gres river. Logging is the leading industry, 15.000,000 feet of logs and timber having been rafted during the past year. Vegetables, berries and game are also shipped.
