SAUGATUCK.

An incorporated village of nearly 900 inhabitants, located on the Kalamazoo river 3 miles above its outlet into lake Michigan. The river here widens into a small lake, formning a fine, commodious harbor, in the improvement of which the general government is expending annually about $5,000. Perhaps no town of its size in the State is so largely engaged in the lake traffic, several tugs. propellers and large vessels being owned here. The village contaius Congregational .. Dutch Reform and Episcopal churches, has good school facilities, a newspaper, the Commer- cial, a neat Odd Fellows' hall and some manufactories. Peaches, grapes, apples and small fruits are largely grown in the vicinity. A strip of shore about 20 miles long by 2 wide has withstood the extreme cold weather of the past winter, and will have the only peaches in the State this summer. The fruit farms here are unin- jured by the cold, and the country will hereafter look to this great fruit region for the bulk of its supplies. Saugatuck is in Saugatuck township. Allegan county, 5 miles west of New Richmond, its station on the C. & W. M. R. R., and 25 miles northwest of Allegan, the county seat. Communication is had by stage twice daily with New Richmond, fate 50 cents. ami daily with Hamilton, fare St. and with Chicago by Capt. R. C. Britain's daily line of steamers. Express, Ameri

SAULT DE STE. MARIE.

The county seat of Chippewa county, is situated on St. Mary's river, at the oulet of lake Superior, opposite the famous "Sault" or rapids. It is 170 miles east of Marquette, and 350 above Detroit. Owing to the ad- vantages afforded by the place as a point of settlement, there has been a large in- crease in population during the past two years, the inhabitants now numbering about 2,500. In contemplating the future prosperity of the town, we would note that there is now in course of construction a railroad from Ottawa, Ont., to the op- posite side of St. Mary's river. and when this is completed but a short time will elapse before another line will be con- structed, extending from St. Paul to this point, this giving an almost air line route from the latter city to the seaboard at Portland, Maine, and shortening the dis- tance by several hundred miles.

The surrounding country is being rap. . idly settled by a thrifty class of farmers, the county also showing a large increase in population. Among the recent improve-

ments in the place is a fine court house, erected at a cost of $24,000, and a Union school building. costing $10,000. It has Catholic, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, Catholic and public schools, several hotels, the Chippewa being the best. A newspaper, the Chipperca County News, is published. But little manufac- turing is done. a saw-mill, flour mill, ma- chine shop and 3 wagonshops, with . some minor ones. completing the list. The ex- ports are chiefly lumber and furs. Fort Brady, an old Government post, is located at the lower end of the town. Six commis- sioned officers and a force of 70 men are stationed here.

The most prominent object of interest here is the celebrated St. Mary's Falls Ship Canal. a work begun in 1853 and completed in 1855. This canal is somewhat less than a mile in length, is 100 feet wide, with an average depth of 12 feet, and cost in round figures $1,000.000. The main part of the - work was cut through solid rock. The increasing traffic through this outlet having , largely outgrown its capacity, a much more capacious lift lock is now being con- structed by the General Government, to be completed during the present spring (1881). This lock is 515 feet long, 80 feet wide in the chamber, and 60 feet wide at the gates, with a depth of 16 feet. This lock is the largest on this continent, if not in the world, and will cost. when completed. in - the neighborhood of $3.000,000. Tele- graph, Western Union. Mail, tri-weekly. Myron W.
