UTICA.


The village of Utica, claiming a popula- tion of 550, is located on Clinton river, in Shelby township, Macomb county. It was settled as early as 1817 and was years ago connected with Detroit by a line of railway known as the Detroit & Shelby R. R. It is on the old Clinton & Kalamazoo canal, which. though not now in use, affords excellent water power, operating 2 large flour mills and a pulp factory. The D. & B. C. R. R. passes through the village, placing it 24 miles north of Detroit. Mt. Clemens, the county seat, is 9 miles east. Utica contains Catholic, Cougrega- tional and Methodist churches, a Union school employing 4 teachers, 2 good hotels, the Exchange and Clinton House, and a live weekly newspaper, the Utiva Sentinel. Wood pulp, flour and general farm pro- ducts form the exports. The soil in the vicinity consists of a sandy loam inter- spersed with clay, wheat and grass being staple crops. Incorporated as a village in 1874, lies on the Air Line Div. M. C. R. R., in Penn township. Cass county, 5 miles east of Cassopolis, the county seat, 16 west of Three Rivers, and 160 west of Detroit. Christian creek supplies a moderate water power here, a flouring mill being operated, besides which there are some minor indus- tries. Cooperage, wood pulp, wheat, oats. fruit and cattle are shipped, the total freight amounting in 1880 to 780 tons. population. 450. Assessed valuation for 1880, $141.071. Churches, Christian, Friends and Methodist. The village has a good school building, 2 hotels, a Masonic hall and offices of the American Express and Western Union Telegraph. Win. L. A station on the G. R. Div. M. C. R. R., 6 miles above Jackson.


VASSAR.


Was begun as a settlement about the year 1849, and incorporated a village in 1872. It is the metropolitan village of Tuscola county, and is situated on the D. & B. C. R. R. 86 miles above Detroit and 22 below Bay City, at the junction of the Caro Br. D. & B. C. R. R., completed and operated to Caro, the county seat, 13 miles northeast. The village stands on Cass river, improved for water power and util- ized by flour and saw-mills. There are 3 churches, Adventist, Methodist and Presby- terian, ordinary school facilities, a weekly newspaper, the Pioneer, a bank, 2 first- class hotels, 2 grain elevators, several man- ufactories, and a population of 1,600. Mail, daily, by rail, and by stage to May- ville and Tuscola, distant 12 and 6 miles, respectively: fare to former, 50 cents; to latter, 25 cents. Express, American. Tel- egraph, Western Union. Wm.
