Originally settled in 1824. is a hamlet of 150 population, on the Huron river, at the dividing line between Van Buren township. Wayne county, and Ypsilanti township, Washtenaw county. It is 30 miles south- west of Detroit and 13 southeast of Ann Arbor. Ypsilanti, 5 miles northwest, with which it is connected by daily mail stage, is its railroad and banking point. RAYNOLDS.


Generally called Reynolds station, is in Raynolds township, Montcalm county. on the G. R. & I. R. R., 1 mile above How- ard City, its postoffice.


READING.


A prosperous village of 900 inhabitants, on the Ft. W. & J. R. R., in the township of Reading., Hillsdale county, 10 miles southwest of Hillsdale, the county seat. Reading was settled in 1840, and incorpo- rated as a village in 1872. Its site is claimed to be one of the highest tracts of land to be found in the lower peninsula of Michigan. Streams have their source in the township, which diverge to the east and west, and finally empty their waters into lakes Eric and Michigan. The town, which is assessed at a valuation of $400,- 000, has a school debt of $2,000. which is payable in February, 1882. It is well sup- ported by a thrifty agricultural region of country, and is one of the most prominet: shipping points on this line of road in the State. The churches are Baptist, Free Will Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian, and the place has a graded school, flourish- ing lodges of Masons and Odd Fellows. and a number of manufacturing enter- prises.
