R., its shipping station. The village is on the Saline river, which affords some water power, at present, however, unim- proved. It has a steam saw-mill, and ships lumber, cheese, wool and grain. YORKVILLE.
A village of 200 population, on Gull creek, the ontlet of Gull lake, a beautiful sheet of water in Ross township, Kala-
mazoo county. The village is 13 miles northeast of Kalamazoo, the county seat, 5 northwest of Augusta station, on the M. C. R. R., its shipping point, and 140 west of Detroit. It contains a Methodist church. public schools, a flouring mill and other in- terests. Exports, grain, flour, pork, wool and live stock. Settled, 1831. Mail, semi- weekly. W. W. Hampton, postmaster. YPSILANTI.
This city, with a population according to the last census of 5.000, was chartered as a village in 1832 and as a city in 1858. It is situated in the township of Ypsilanti. on the Huron river, in the eastern part of Washtenaw county. It is a station on the M. C. R. R., at its junction with the D .. H. & S. W. R. R., the latter road giving transportation facilities with Hillsdale. Logansport and Indianapolis. Ypsilanti is the seat of the State Normal School. The location was secured in 1849, at a cost of $13,500, and the donation of the grounds. Besides the above, it has good free schools; a new building was erected in 1878, at a cost of about $35,000. Connected with the schools are 2 public libraries containing 3.500 volumes. There is also a ladies' library, with over 1,200 volumes. Of churches it has S; the most prominent are the Baptist, Lutheran, Cath- olic, Methodist, Presbyterian and Episco pal. The excellent water power here is utilized by a number of maunfactories Prominent among these are the paper mills. for which special industry this location is unsurpassed. A village of 130 inhabitants, in East Bay township, Grand Traverse county, 12 miles northeast of Traverse City, the county seat. It is on the White Water creek, near the east shore of Grand Trav- erse bay, and has daily communication by stage with Traverse City and Elk Rapids. A thriving incorporated village of 800 in- habitants on the C. & W. M. R. R., Grand Rapids Br., 5 miles east of Holland, and 20 southwest of Grand Rapids. It is in the township of Zeeland, Ottawa county, 30 miles by rail southeast of Grand Haven, the seat of justice. It has 2 churches, a graded school, a steam saw-mill, flouring mill, 2 planing mills, a taunery, a brick yard and a private bank.
