At the intersection of the F. & P. M and G. R. & I. railroads, in the southwe :: corner of Osceola county, is an incorpo- rated village of about 1,200 population, 3: miles west of Hersey, the county seat. 4S east of Ludington, 68 north of Grand Rip- ids and 190 northwest of Detroit. The
Hersey river, a tributary of the Muskegon. furnishes water power for operating a flour mill within the village, and a saw-mill and woolen mill one mile north. A combined saw and grist mill, a planing mill, a wool boot manufactory and machine shop, all using steam power, a foundry and the [. S. Land Office for the Reed City district. are located here. The village has a bank. a weekly newspaper, Baptist, Congress- tional and Methodist churches, a good pub- lic school and 4 hotels, the National being the best. Telegraph, Western Union. A prominent village on the D. & B. C. R. R., in Denmark township, near the western line of Tuscola county. It dates as a settlement from 1873, contains about 400 inhabitants, and is the shipping and trading point for a large section of farming country. Staves, lumber and charcoal are manufactured, and with grain and other farm products form the shipments. Reese has Baptist and Methodist churches and a good public school. A village of 1,800 inhabitants, and the location of the famous Republic iron mine, in the township of Republic, Marquette county. It is ou the Michiganme river, at the terminus of the Republic Br. M., H. & O. R. R., 36 miles west of Marquette. 58 southeast of L'Anse, and 9 south of Hun- boldt. The Republic was opened in 18;2. and is the most productive of the mines in the Marquette region. Some 400 men are employed, and the shipments of ore aver. age about 170,000 tons annually. A Meth-
