Loose Leaf B. To the Honourable, the Governor under his Royall Highes the Duke of Yorke. The humble address of the Inhabitants of the Towne of Easthampton uppon Long Islland sheweth.
Whereas at that time the Goverment of New Yorke was Established under our Soveraigne Lord ye King by Collonell Richard Niccolls & those gentleman sent in Commission with him wee ye Inhabitants of this Towne, soe well as ye rest of ye Island, being required, sent our messengers to attend their Honor & then both by word & writeing wee were promised & engaged the enjoyment of all Privelledges & liberties which other of his Majesties subjects doe enjoy which was much to our Content & satisfaction. Alsoe after this being required by theise his Maties Commissioners to send upp our Deputies to meete at Hempsteade, And there the whole Isl- land being Assembled in our Representatives wee did then & there uppon ye renewall of those former promises of our fre- dome & liberties, grant & Compact with ye said Collonell Niccolls Governor under his Royall Highnes, That wee would allow soe much out of our estate yeerely as might defray ye Charge of Publicke Justice amongst us & for killing of wollves &c.
But may it please yor Honor to understand that since yt time we are deprived & prohibited of our Birthright freedomes

& Privelledges to which both wee & onr Ancestors were borne ; allthough we have neither forfeited them by any Mis- demeanor of ours, nor have at any time bene forbidden ye due use & exercise of them by Command of our Gratious King yt we know of ; And as yet neither wee nor ye rest of his Majesties subjects uppon this Islland have bene at any time addmitted since then to enjoy a generall & free Assemblie by our Representatives as other of his Majesties subjects have had ye priveledge of, But Lawes & orders have bene Imposed upon us from time to time without our Consent and therein we are totally deprived of a fundamentall Priveledge of our English Nation Together with ye obstruction of Trafficke & negotiation with others of his Majesties subjects, so yt wee are become very unlike other of ye King's subjects in all other Colloneys & Jurisdictions here in Amerrica, And cannot but much resent our greivance in this respect & remaine discouraged with respect to ye setle-ment of ourselves & posteritie after us, Yet all this time pay- ments & performance of what hath bene Imposed uppon us hath not bene omitted on our parts allthough ye perfor- ance of our Promised priveledges aforesaid have bene wholly unperformed, And what payments from yeere to yeere this many yeeres hath bene made by us, hath bene made use of to other purposes then att first they were granted for & in- tended by us, so yt wee cannot but feare if ye Pulick affaires of government shall continue in this manner as they have bene, but hope better, least our freedome should be turned in- to bondage & our Antient priveledges so infringed yt they will never arrive at our posteritie ; And wee ourselves may be Justlie highly Culpable before his Majestie for our subjection to & supporting of such a goverment Constituted soe con- trarie to ye fundamental Lawes of England : It being a principall part of his Majesties antient & Just goverment, to rule over a free people endowed with many priveledges above

others & not over bond men oppressed by Arbitrarie Imposi- tions & executions.
Theise things considered wee cannot but humbly request yor Honor to weigh our Condition in ye ballance of equite with all seryousnes, before you proceede to any action of yor owne whereby to assert ye proceedings of yor Predecessors in goverment, which wee now with all Christian moderation doe Complain of ; And for ye redresse hereof, an addresse as we understand, hath bene made to his Royall Highneese by a late Court of Assize in behalfe of us & our Neighbors in this Colloney so yt wee are not without hope yor Honor hath re- received Directions to ease us in these our greivances by ye remedies humbly represented by us & Petitioned for by ye Inhabitants of this Illand to ye last Court of Assize yt did sitt att New Yorke, to which as yet no satisfactorie answer hath bene made ; If therefore yor Honor may bee an Instrument under God & his majesty our sovereigne Lord ye King to re- lieve us and ye rest of his Majesties good subjects upon this Island in our greivances & bee a means to helpe us to ye free enjoyment of our Birthright priveledges which ye Funda- mentall Constitution of our English Nation Goverment doth invest us with, which as wee doubt not will bee very plesing to his Majestie and all yor Loyall Superiors, soe yor Honor may be assured it will firmly engage & oblidge us yor humble Petitioners & our Posteritie after us to have yor Prudence & Justice in Honourable Remembrance, as ye first restorer of our freedome & priveledges to our great Contentment. But sir, if it shall fall out otherwise which God forbid, & we are very unwilling to suppose, & yt your Honor should by rea- son of Counsells & suggestions pursue a Contrarie Course to our humble desires, soe as to Continue or augment our greiv- ancees, then we request yor Honor's Pardon & excuse if in our Conscience to God & in Honor & Submission to his Majestie our most gratious soveraigne, wee Prostrate our

selves & our state and Condition before ye Throne of his un- matchable Justice & Clemencie, where wee doubt not to find reliefe & Restauration, And can doe noe lesse in ye meane time but resent our forlorne & beareaved Condition : so sir as our prayers are Continued for a happy & glorious Reigne to his sacred Majestie the King ; Alsoe our prayers shall bee for yor Honr yt you may bee a blessed Instrument under God in yor Wisdome Justice & Equitie over us, and humblie make bold to subscribe our sellves his Majesties poore depressed though Loyall subjects : And yor most Humble Servts.

Wee being Informed that Complaint is Carried up to yor Honr against this Town, wth Respect to one Arthur Chandler, who some tyme haveing had a Residence in this Town though by Reason of his vicious behaviour he was warned (& yt within a month of his being here) to be gone out of the Town, yet he hath Contrary to the mind of the towne, willfully Continued in it, The towne haveing sufficient evidence ofhis being a notorious Theefe both . out of the Town & since his being amongst us, hath beene the more averse to his being admitted as an Inhabitant amongst us some time since he sent his request to the Towne (when they had occasion to meet about some affaires concer- ned the Towne) for a Peice of Land to build him a house to live in, wch thing the Town utterly Refused, desireing him to be of Towne, as they had done formerly, considering the quality of the Person : yet after all this he presumptiously, & althogether unknown to the Towne, ceases upon some of the Towns Land, & builds upon it att a Remote end of the Towne, where he might have the more occasion & opurtunity to pilfer, & steale their creatures att their going out or come- ing in, all yt part of the Town being in Continuall feare of him in yt respect, where he lives. reason of their Causeing his fabrick to be pulled down, it was but a cellar, & a few Pallisadoes plucked up was set up, & a few Round sticks laid to beare up a small Roofe over it : & wheras it may be further alledged that the man is left Des- titute of a place to live in this winter, that is not so, for he hath had a good house over his head hitherto, & so he may have still for this winter, or till he can provide for him selfe else where next Springe. Our earnest & humble request to yor Honr is, that you be pleased not to receive any Informa- tion or Complaint agst us, before yor Honr hath heard both ยท sides speak, yt we may have Liberty to answer for our selves or yt we may have a Legall trial of the case nearer home att ye County Court, especialy Considering the man himselfe, as (he hath affirmed to sundry of us) hath as he sayth put in no Complaint agst us to yor Honr, & therefore we feare the rise of it is nothing but a pure peice of malice,so wishing all pros- perity to yor Honr, we rest yor Honrs
