CHAPTER XXVI.

STRATFORD CONCLUDED.

ANY occurrences have transpired in Strat- ford which, if connected with other events and the circumstances of the people, would make very interesting history, but for want of room in this book and time to gather the information and make the connections, they must be left for future efforts. The items already given, with a few additional in this chapter, must end the historical part of this work.

In a former part of this book reference was made to the sudden and unexplained ending of the proprietors' records of com- mon lands and the common fields. Since then two books of the records of the com- mon fields have been seen which show that the "Newfield" lying east of Nesumpaw's creek, now Bruce's brook, and the Farfield lying west of that brook and east of the Yellow Mill, were continued from 1763 until near 1800, or until each land owner had inclosed his land. The "Great Meadow," as a field, is still fenced and the organization is still preserved for the purpose of keeping up the common fence. 1

The Intack field continued until about 1780 and then ceased.

Quimby's Neck field, consisting of upland and salt meadow, lying northeast of Great Neck bridge, ceased about 1790 to be a common field.

The Common Meadow field lying across the creek south of Quimby's field is continued, the common fence is maintained, but the field consists only of salt meadow.

History of Stratford.

The Great Meadow field, lying west and southwest of the Great Neck bridge, containing towards 1,000 acres, is still maintained in part, the common fence for some distance being kept up.

The West Point field, lying across the creek, or Gut, eastward from the Great Meadow, consisting of upland and salt meadow, was discontinued about 1785.

The Many Great Elm trees of Stratford-the charm- ing ornamentation of the village-would have been referred to in this work long ago if the period when they were planted could have been ascertained. Those on the west side of Main street from the Congregational Church south to the first corner, appear to be older than those on the same side of the street southward nearly to the corner at the pump. From all that can be learned the first of these were planted about 1750. The largest button-ball tree, which is in front of the dwelling of Mr. Robert W. Curtis, was planted by Mr. Bene- dict Lillingston not two years, one way or the other, from 1814.

By a careful computation gathered from various declara- tions made by the old people in the hearing of Mr. Nathan W. Wells, the great elm now standing in front of the residence of his uncle, Mr. Elias Wells, is about 150 years old, and when planted there, it was carried by Thomas Wells on his shoulder and planted; that was about 1736.' The elms at the foot of Academy hill, in front of the Plant place, were set in 1804, the year Governor Plant graduated; and the elms on Academy Hill were planted in a square in 1862, by Frederick Sedgwick, the principal of the Academy.

The Stratford Academy. 1847-1872.

Any history of Stratford would be incomplete without some notice of the school maintained during the quarter of a century, 1847-1872, in the Stratford Academy. No other single influence, whether ecclesiastical, educational or social, was so potent as this in forming the intellectual and moral character of the generation now upon the stage.

For several years succeeding 1836 various schools, for
