1. BARNUM, Thomas, was one of the first eight settlers of the town of Danbury, Conn. The seven others were : Thomas Taylor, Francis Bushnell, John Hoyt. James_Benedict, Samuel Benedict, James Beebe and Judah Gregory. They purchased the land from the Indians and commenced the preparations for settlement in the year 1684, and all made their residences there in the spring of 1685.
As far as known the first land record of this early Connecticut settler is on a Fairfield town book as follows : " 28 Feb. 1673. Tho: Barnam hath by purchase of John Crump one parcel of land at Maximus, being in quantity by estimation three quarters of an acre more or less."
Four of his children are recorded in Fairfield thus :
"Thomas, born July 9, 1663. Hannah, born October 4, 1680. Ebenezer, born May 29, 1682."
John, born February 24, 1677.
The next record is in Norwalk : "Granted by the plantation unto Thos: Barnam a certaine swampe lyinge neere the west side of Stonie brooke and not far of Soabatucke hill, the sayed swampe containinge five acres more or lesse and lyeth bounded of west north and south with the common land. Aprill the 30th, 1678."
Another record of Norwalk at the same time says the plantation granted to Thomas Barnum-" three acres lying by the land said Thomas purchased of John Rayment." Therefore he had previously become possessed of land

there which had not been recorded, or if so the records are not to be found. Also the precise entry made in Fairfield of Thomas Barnum's four children is made in Norwalk. Hall's history of Norwalk says: "Thomas Barnam, of Fairfield, had a grant [of land] before 1663." The same history gives the assessment of Mr. Barnam's estate in lands in that town, in 1671 and 1687, as £40. At the town meeting in Norwalk, Nov. 8, 1681, he was "appointed to oversee the youth in times of exercise on the Sabbath and other public meetings."
The name is spelled in Fairfield and Norwalk " Barnam,' but it may have been originally Burnham, or Burnam, all three of which are English names .* There was a Thomas Barnain in Springfield, Mass., in 1651, according to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary. Tradition, however, says Thomas Barnam of Norwalk, came first to New York and afterwards to Norwalk.
He married as second wife, Sarah, widow of John Hurd, Sen., of Stratford. Her husband, John Hurd, died in 1681. She was the daughter of John Thompson, the first of that name in Stratford.
Thomas Barnum. Sen., died in Danbury, December 26, 1695, about 70 years of age, leaving no will. His estate, amounting to 6330-4ª-4ª, was divided among " five sons and five daughters, the eldest son to have a double portion."
His widow, Sarah, returned to Stratfield in Stratford, where she died June. 1718. aged 76 years.

6. Francis, son of Thomas Barnum, Sen., married Mary -. The facts con- cerning this family, so far as given here, were recently obtained by Mr. T. D. Rogers, of New Fairfield, from two deeds found in a private family, given by Francis Barnum to his " six sons," named in the order hereafter transcribed. and by a quit claim deed given to Abel Barnum by "Mary Barnum, widow," for any claims she might have to lands which came to him "from his Hond Father and my late Husband, Francis Barnum." This document is dated May 20, 1741. In one of the deeds Francis Barnum mentions, besides these five sons, "my other heirs," indicating that there were other children, one of whom, it is supposed, was Mary, who married Daniel Waller, of Danbury, and afterwards of New Milford.

1. BASSETT, John, and wife Margery, were in New England, probably near Boston, when they were engaged to come to New Haven, to be servants to Mr. Goodyear, if he accepted them, and if not then Mr. Bassett agreed to pay Mr. John Evance the cost of his transportation. He and his son Robert were in New Haven and took the oath of allegiance Aug. 5, 1644. In 1646 he had paid his transportation money, {11-7', and purchased a house and two acres of land. In October, 1949, he was freed from watching because he had a fall and was lame, and the next November he was further released because of continued lameness. His will was dated Feb. 17, 1652. and proved Feb. 3, 1653. The inventory of his estate was taken Feb. 21, 1652, amounting to £69-9". In his will he gave all his property to his wife and after her death to his son Robert, and mentions no other children.
Soon after the death of John Bassett his widow removed to Stamford, whither her son Robert had preceded her.
" The last will and testament of goodwife Bassett, of Stamford, was dated the 5th of 4th month, 1653, and proved by John Bishop upon oath, May, 1656."* These wills prove that this Mary Bassett was not the " Goodwife Bassett" said to have been executed in Stratford in 1651. In her will she gave to her son Robert the house and home-lot in New Haven. She mentions in her will the following children :
2. Robert, b. in England.+ - 6. Elizabeth-not then of age.
3. Daughter, who m. John Emery.
4. Daughter, who m. John Webb.
5. Sarab.
2. Robert, son of John and Margey Bassett, was in New Haven and took the oath Aug. 5. 1644. In 1645 he was one of the two drummers of the town. In 1648 he purchased a house and lot in New Haven, and in 1649 he was fined for not having "a ladder for his house to stand by the chimney, though he had been warned oft times." In 1649 he was still drummer in New Haven and there- fore petitioned to be freed from standing on watch. In 1651 he was a witness to a deed in Stamford. In 1653 followed the troubled times in Stamford, in which Robert Bassett had a prominent part, as given in this book, page 255, which he survived with honor, since in 1654, in the proposed expedition against the Dutch at New Amsterdam, he was appointed by the New Haven Court "chief drummer, and Andrew Elliot to be under him." He probably died in Stamford. On page 255 of this book he is represented as settling in Stratford, but it was his son Robert that bought land here Nov. 10, 1681, as is
