1. DeFOREST .* This family appears first in Avesnes, France, where from 1559, for many years a Spanish Garrison was maintained, so that any tendency to the Protestant faith was specially subject to cruel repression. Here, how- ever, the DeForests and several other families embraced the Reformed doc- trines. Successive persecutions led to several removals to "Le Coteau," to " Ledau," and to Leyden. In the latter place in 1606 were living four broth- ers : Jean (John), Jesse, Michel and Gerard DeForest, and their sister Jeanne (Jane), who had m. a Cartier from Columbier, France. Jesse and Gerard DeForest were dyers by trade. Of Jean it is only known that he had a daughter, married Dec. 15. 1566, while living at Le Cateau.

Gerard DeForest, born at Avesnes, married in Leyden, Aug. 12, 1611, Hester Le Grange, daughter of Crispin and Agnes Le Grange, who was born in Leyden, her parents being French. He lived 45 years after his marriage. acquired a good property and saw his children respectably married in Leyden. Of Michel DeForest nothing is known.

1. Jesse DeForest, m. probably at Leyden, France, Marie du Cloux. He with others soon after the Plymouth Pilgrims left Holland corresponded with the English authorities relative to settling in Virginia.

The project failed, and in 1623 he joined an expedition for the conquest of Brazil, where he died in 1624, probably at St. Salvador.

79. Gideon, son of Joseph and Susannah (Mills) DeForest, m. Hannah, dau. of Abel Birdseye, about 1794. In the year 1795 he removed to and settled at Edineston, in Otsego county, N. Y. In that journey, near the close, he found for his road little more than blazed trees in a deep wilderness, for but few settlers had preceded him to that place. His wife Hannah Birdsey, said to have been then of Derby, with her spinning wheel, which was still preserved a few years since, was a meet companion for the pioneer. He was both farmer and tailor, and fruit-trees and fields were witness to his toil. At his home, the cow-bell and stroke of the axe were heard without, and within the loom beat time to the hum of the wheel.

He had five sons and three daughters, and in 1839 a re-union of the family was held at the home of Lee DeForest, of South Edmeston. who then held a part of the old farm. They met and inaugurated a momument which one of the sons, Charles A. DeForest, of Albany, had raised to the memory of the parents.

Gideon DeForest died Dec. 9, 1840, in his 76th year, and Hannah, his widow, died Sept. 25, 1844. in her 72d year.

In 1835, Gideon DeForest held a re-union at the Eagle tavern in Edmes- ton, with his three brothers, "all born under the same roof at Stratford, they being all there ever was of their father's family except one that died an in- fant. They were all soldiers in the revolution, all received pensions, and when the youngest was 70 years of age, they came together for the first time during more than half a century.
