1. WHEELER, Moses, was in New Haven as early as 1641, and probably came with that company from London in 1638. He m. probably in New Haven, Miriam, the sister of Joseph Hawley ; and he was brother-in-law to the Rev. Adam Blakeman, the first pastor at Stratford, the latter having m. Jane, the sister of Moses Wheeler, for John Blakeman, son of Adam, calls, in his will in 1662, Moses Wheeler his uncle.

The Wheeler family had been resident in the county of Kent, England, many generations before Moses was born, which occurred, according to the records, in 1598, but the Kent Wheelers emigrated from Hertfordshire, or that region, north of London. The Wheelers have been numerous in London for 400 years. .

Moses Wheeler was among the first who received an allotment of land in New Haven, which was in 1643. He was in Stratford in 1648, when the privilege of a ferry across the Housatonic was granted him by the General Court, and may have been here several years previous to that date. He was a ship carpenter by trade, became a farmer, as well as the ferry man, was an extensive land holder, and one of the leading influential men of Stratford township.

The records of the General Court for May 18, 1684, give the following :

" The motion made by Mr. Ludlowe, concerning Moses Wheeler for the keeping the Ferry at Stratford, is referred to such as shall keep the next Court at Fairfield, both in behalf of the Country and Town of Stratford."

The ferry was soon established in the hands of Mr. Wheeler, for the town records show that a highway to it was ordered in 1653, and in 1670, the town leased to " Moses Wheeler, ship carpenter, the ferry with thirty or forty acres of upland and six of meadow joining to the ferry for twenty-one years, with- out tax or rate, except six-pence per annum during said lease," and the inbab- itants were to be " ferried over for one half-penny per person, and two pence per horse and beast." The agreement stipulated that if he should leave the ferry at the end of twenty-one years the town should pay him for his improve- ments and take the property.

Moses Wheeler, the first at Stratford, died March 1, 1698, aged 100 years. His property he gave, mostly, to his children in 1688, ten years before his death ; Moses, Junior, Samuel Wheeler and Jacob Walker-son-in-law-receiving the tract of land bought by their father of the Indians, in Stratford near Derby, forty years before, and Samuel, received, in the will, the homestead and all pertaining to it. Moses, Jr., had previously-in 1674-received a dwelling and lands from his father.

Moses Wheeler's will was dated February 19, 1689-90, and in it, after dis- posing of his real estate and most of his personal property to Samuel, he says : " I give to my daughter Mirriam two peuter dishes ; to my son Moses, his wife, yo great peuter platter ; to my daughter Mary a bras kitle houlding ten or twelve gallons, the abridgement of the marter booke and Mr. Brooks his devices of Satan ; to Elizabeth ye wife of my son Samuel ye great kitle ;; to Mr Israel Chauncey twenty shillings in silver." No near relation is known to have existed between Moses Wheeler, of Stratford, and Thomas, Sen., and Ephraim Wheeler, brothers, of Fairfield, but they probably were not very distantly related. Thomas, Ephraim and Timothy, of Concord, Mass., were brothers.
