In 1772 the following persons left Stratford, Connecticut, and made the first permanent settlement in Stratford, New Hampshire :
Joshua Lampkin. Archippas Blodget.
James Curtiss.
Timothy DeForest.
William Curtiss.
Benjamin Blakeman.
James Brown.

The town records of Stratford, N. H., say : "August 13, 1773, the sum of ten pounds was voted to Mrs. Barlow, wife of Joseph Barlow, . . . that she hath proceeded with her husband and family of children to come to our township of Stratford, and is the first woman that hath settled upon said township." The ten men above named were voted "three pounds each for their extraordinary trouble and expense in proceeding to settle and make improvements."
James Brown, son of Capt. Isaiah Brown, called the first town meeting in Stratford, N. H., and was one of the most prominent citizens for many years. His marriage to Hannah, daughter of Joshua Lamkin, in 1775, was the first marriage that occurred in that township, she being sixteen years of age, and their daughter, Anna, born in 1776, was the first child born in the town. He died in 1813. His widow, Hannah, died in 1836, aged 77 years. He remained in that township through the Revolutionary war ; had charge of the fort, and his descendants are still numerous in that part of the country.
Daniel and Agur Platt were among the early settlers there and are said to have gone from Stratford, Conn. Agur returned here and died, but Daniel married a daughter of James Brown, lived a prominent citizen, and died about 1860. The Johnsons, Blodgets, Curtisses and Platts are very numerous there yet.

GENEALOGIES
INTRODUCTORY STATEMENTS.
The following genealogies are copied mostly from the town records of Strat- ford, recorded before the year 1800. A large proportion of those later than that date were furnished by interested parties or obtained from the manuscript of the Rev. B. L. Swan. While the author had the use of Mr. Swan's extensive manu- scripts, without cost, which was a great favor, yet he copied carefully all of the records of marriages and births on the Stratford town books before the year 1800 -a few being as late as 1830-contained in the First, Second and Fifth books. He also copied the church records of Stratfield and Trumbull, and had the advantage of all Mr. Swan had collected from the church records of Stratford, Huntington and Monroe, and from his personal inquiry among the people of those towns for many years. Mr. Swan's research in connecting the families by regular descent from father to son and so down for seven or eight generations, has been of great service in making the record what it is. Besides this, several families and friends began as soon as they heard of the proposition for this book, to make collections, and they have been as fully successful as desired by the author, who has the printer's bills to settle. Thus a large amount of family history has been secured, but, to complete the record, every deed on the land records should be examined, for the names of some children can be found only by the records of the distribution of property. For such a work the author has not had time. This record of families, however, as well as the whole book, contains much more than was intended in the original plan of the work, although much more could be collected from the families now resident in these towns.
Rev. Mr. Swan's Note.
" The undersigned, having for many years, as time and material served, col- lected data from all reliable sources for a Register of the First Settlers of Stratford and their descendants, gladly places the results of his research in the hands of Mr. Orcutt for use, as he may find occasion, in his History of Stratford. Experi- ence, however, and the study of genealogical volumes, obliges me to say : There is no perfect genealogical work extant, nor can one be made. The causes of error are so many and so difficult to avoid, that for myself I can claim, after most faith- ful and painstaking endeavor, only to have made no intentional omissions or mistakes, and to have approximated the exact truth so far as attainable facts and their careful collection have enabled me.
BENJAMIN L. SWAN."
