His will was probated Mar. 23, 1789, and in it he mentions his wife Mary, eldest dau. Eunice Wells; 2d. dau. Huldah Burroughs, and his only son William. The will of his widow Mary was probated July 5, 1799.

19. David, son of Solomon and Sarah (Bennett). Plant, m. Catharine Tomlin- son, Dec. 5, 1810. She was born Oct. 9, 1787, and died June 2, 1835. He died Oct. 18, 1851. He fitted for college at the Cheshire Academy, and was graduated at Yale College in 1804, studied law at the Litchfield Law School, a classmate friend of John C. Calhoun. In 1819 and 1820, he was Speaker of the House of Representatives, and in 1821 was elected to the State Senate, and twice re-elected. He was Lieutenant-Governor of the State from 1823 to 1827, and from 1827 to 1829 he was a member of the Congress of the United States. In politics he was a staunch Whig. Calhoun, when Secretary of State, offered him, for friendship's sake, any position within his gift, but he refused to hold office under the dominant party. He was one of the most influential men in political circles in his day, in the State of Connecticut.

8. Samuel, son of John and Margaret Prince, of Hull, Mass., was made free- man in 1678, removed to Rochester or Middleborough, Mass., of which he was a representative after the new charter of 1692. He soon afterwards settled in Sandwich, from whence his sons came to Stratford, Ct. He m. Ist, Martha, dau. of William Barstow, of Scituate. He m. 2d, Mary, dau. of Governor Hinckley, of Mass. She died after 1695 ; prob. in 1698.


14. Thomas, Rev., b. May, 1687; was grad- uated at Harvard College in 1707. Of him Judge Savage, the genealogist, says : "The assiduous analist whose service in perpetuating evidence relative to our carly history exceeds that of any other man, since the first generation."


15. Nathan, a graduate of Harvard College, 1718; "a man of talents superior to his brothers, but of less value to society."

History of Stratford.


17. Joseph, son of Samuel, Ist, and Mary (Hinckley) Prince, came to Stratford with wife Hannah, and joined the church here in 1736, with letters from the church in Sandwich, Mass. He was brother to Rev. Thomas Prince, and his mother was the dau. of Governor Hinckley, of Mass.


His grave-stone says : "Joseph Prince, 4th son of Samuel Prince, Esqr., by Mary, his 2d Wife, of Sandwich, where he was born April Ist, 1695, and died here December 4, 1747, in the 53d year of his age, much beloved and lamented." His monument is a sand-stone tablet with a slate-stone coal-of- arms inlaid ; and is probably the only coat-of-arms worked on stone in the town.
