Samuel Nichols, D.D., son of Ephraim Nichols, of Revo- lutionary fame, and great-grandson of Ignatius Nichols, was born at Greenfield Hill, Nov. 14, 1787 ; was graduated at Yale College in 1811, and ordained by Bishop Hobart, both to the Diaconate and Priesthood in Trinity Church, New York, March 27. 1816. He married Susan W. Warner, a descendant of the Earl of Waldegrave, and niece of Effingham Warner. In 1815, he became rector of St. Matthew's Church, Bedford, Westchester county, N. Y., where his ministry continued twenty-two years. During his connection with that parish he was the intimate friend of Chief Justice Jay, and officiated at his funeral. A volume of the sermons delivered by Dr. Nichols has been edited by the Rev. Sylvester Clarke, of Bridgeport. At the time of Dr. Nichols' decease, July 17, 1880, he was the oldest Episcopal minister in America. Seven sons and two daughters survive him. Among the sons are Effingham H. Nichols, of New York, a prominent lawyer and president of the Union Pacific Rail- road ; the Rev. George Warner Nichols, of Norwalk, and Hon. Alexander R. T. Nichols, of Greenfield Hill.

He was a printer by trade, and in 1795 settled in Danbury, where he started the " Farmer's Journal and Columbian Ark " in February, 1803. He removed to Bridgeport in 1810, and established the Bridgeport " Farmer," which he relinquished to his son Roswell S. in 1837.

309. Rev. William F., son of Charles H. and Delilah (Dunscombe) Nichols, was educated at the Poughkeepsie Collegiate School, Trinity College, at Hartford, Ct., graduating in 1870; completing the course at the Berkeley Divinity School. He was ordained Deacon by Bishop Williams, June 4, 1873. and advanced to the Priesthood, June 4, 1874 ; was assistant minister at the Church of the Holy Trinity at Middletown, Ct., private Secretary to Bishop Williams, from 1871 to 1876; rector of St. James, West Hartford ; and has been rector of Christ Church, Hartford, since 1877.


1. NICOLL," Hon. Matthias, the first English Secretary of the Colony of New York, was descended from an ancient and honorable family at Isleppe, Northampton county, England, and was by profession a lawyer. His father . was a clergyman of the established church. He came to New Amsterdam, now New York, in 1664, with his cousin, Sir Richard Nicoll, the first English governor of that colony. He entered upon the practice of the law and the organization of the new government, under the Duke of York, and was appointed, by Sir Richard, Secretary of the colony.


In 1672 he was chosen mayor of New York City. He died Dec. 22, 1687. leaving a large estate on Long Island, and a son William. His daughter, Margaret Nicoll, married Richard Floyd, grandmother of William Floyd, who signed the Declaration of Independence.


William Nicoll, the son, was born in England in 1657, and was educated for the bar. In 1677 he accompanied Sir Edmond Andros to England, but returned thence to New York, where he afterwards acquired a high reputation at the bar.


In 1693 he married Ann, daughter of Jeremiah and widow of her cousin, Killian VanRensellaer, eldest son of Johannes, heir in law of Killian Van Rensellaer, first proprietor of the manors of Rensellaerwick and Claverack. William Nicoll died in 1723, leaving a family of children, as follows :

1. PATTERSON, Andrew, came from Hamilton, in Scotland, m. Eliza- beth, dau. of John Peat, Jr., Feb. 19, 1690. He died Dec. 2, 1746, aged 87 years. The wid. Elizabeth died in Cornwall, Ct., in the 96th year of her age. He came with Robert McEwen and ten others, in 1685, in the Henry and Frances to Perth, Amboy, N. J. They fled from the severities of the adminis- tration against the Covenanters, as Mr. McEwen wrote in his journal of his share in the fight at Bothwell Bridge, a few years before he sailed, and he was careful to note the day of sail, 5th Sept., and the day of landing, Dec. 18, 1685, and the day of reaching Stratford, 18th of Feb., to which they came on foot, feeling confident of more security in Connecticut than in East Jersey.

8. John, son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Peat) Patterson, m. Mary, dau. of Josiah Curtiss, June -,. 1730. He was a graduate of Yale College in 1728. He removed to Cornwall, about 1753, thence after 1760, to what is now Windham Co., Vt., and before the Revolution he removed about sixty miles further north, in New Hampshire, where his wife died July 18, 1789, in her 78th year, and he died Jan. 20, 1806, in his 95th year .*
