THE FRANCIS STILES LINE.
1. " Mr." Francis Stiles, the ancestor of the most of the Woodbury and Stratford families of that name, was one of four brothers (children of Thomas and Maria Stiles) born in Milbroke, Bedfordshire, England, who emigrated to America and settled at Windsor, Conn., in 1635. He was baptized in Mil- broke, I Aug. 1602 ; and, for some time previous to his coming to America, had been a master carpenter and citizen of London. Though the third, in order of birth, of the four brethren, he was by far the most enterprising and energetic in character ; and it was through his influence and means undoubt- edly, that the fam ly removed hither. In the stir of emigration which about this time pervaded all England, he found bis opportunity, in someway, to the notice of Sir Richard Saltonstall and the other gentlemen who were associated with him in a contemplated settlement upon the Connecticut river, under a patent recently obtained by them ; and he was selected as steward, or man- ager, to precede them and prepare the necessary houses, grounds, etc., against their arrival. He sailed in a pinnace belonging to Sir Richard Saltonstall, on or about March 16, 1634-[5]. in charge of a party of twenty-two male adults, three adult females, and two children (three of the men being . is brothers Harry, John and Thomas ; one of the women being his own wife, and another the wife of his brother John, with her two children) ; and arrived in Boston harbor on the 16th of June. Remaining there about ten days, she sailed for Saltonstall's plantations, near what is now Windsor, Conn .. which they reached about July 1, 1635. The only actual white settlers at that time, in that place, were the occupants of the Plymouth trading-house, under Capt. John Holmes. A party of men, however, had come overland, only a few days before, from the Massachusetts Bay Colony, "prospecting ;" but, at the time of Stiles' arrival, were exploring further up the river, near the present Longme dow, in quest of a suitable location. Acting under Saltonstall's instructions, Stiles landed his party and stores on the west bank of the river, near what is now known as the " Chief-Justice Ellsworth place," and lost no time in getting to work. Hardly had he commenced. however, before the Massachusetts men, who had found no place above quite so much to their liking as the neighborhood of the Plymouth traders, returned ; and their jealousy was immediately excited by the presence of Mr. Stiles as the agent of a rival corporation ; and. under a claim that they were within the jurisdiction of Massachusetts, they proceeded to put a stop to his settlement and improvements. The dispute was long, and (if we may believe Saltonstall's letter, which he sent to Gov. Winthrop, the next year) an angry one ; and we know that Mr. Francis Stiles was not of a temper which

in March, 1654, when he was complained of to the Court for peppering Naan epaquowwe, an Indian of that place, "in his body, with swann shott, uppon a Sabbath day," yet we cannot fix the exact date of his first removal from Wind- sor. Cothren thinks that as " he is not named in any Stratford record, there seems to be no reason for thinking he ever came to that town," and, again, that he may " very likely have been an original patentee," though "like others, he came not himself to dwell there." But Matthew Grant's Old Church Rec- ord gives under date of Aug. 17. 1677, " what children have been born in Wind- sor from our beginning hitherto, so far as I am able to find out ;" then " being gone yet had children born here." Among these latter he names " Francis Stills, 4 [children]." The probable birth-date of his fourth child,. Benjamin, 1651, would show that he still resided in Windsor at that date. And Savage (N. E. Gen. Dict.) thinks that Francis Stiles died at Windsor not later than 1653. In the seating of the meeting-house at Windsor, also (as given in Stiles' Hist. and Geneal. of Ancient Windsor, pp. 149, 150), in January, 1659-60, among those " that have paid, and were placed in the long seats when they paid," we find the name of "Mr. Stiles, 3s.," and his brother John Stiles. There were two rows of long seats, accommodating five persons to a seat, at 3s. apiece, or 6s. for a man and his wife. As Francis was the only one of the Stileses to whom the title of " Mr." was accorded, this identifies him as then living in Windsor ; or, at least as still having a right to a seat in the meeting house there. So that it seems quite probable, as Mr. Orcutt suggests, that he removed to Stratford about 1660. In corroboration of this he cites the follow- ing from the Stratford Records : "Caleb Nichols purchased of Mr. Stills [Stiles, evidently, since there were none of the name of Still in town] one house lot, one acre and a quarter, bounded with Mr. Fayrechild on the south, Isaac Nichols on the west, my own lot that was Francis Nichols, on the north, and the street on the East."" No date is given to this record of purchase, but being in the handwriting of Joseph Hawley, it must have been before 1666 ; and, from its relation to other records, was probably made about 1660. Mr. Stiles' purchase of this property is not recorded, as far as can be ascer- tained. Besides this we have the fact that Robert Clark who married Francis Stiles' widow, gave to her three sons by Stiles, about 50 acres of land. which there is no record of his having purchased. This, when he had several children of his own, indicates that he had received it from his wife (Stiles' widow) ; and that Stiles had resided in Stratford for several years and was the owner of considerable property at Oronoke, and a home lot.
Mr. Francis Stiles married in England ; his wife probably being the "Joan Stiles, [aged] 35 years," who appears in the passenger list of the vessel which conveyed the Saltonstall party over. The exact date of Mr. Stiles' death is unknown. His widow, in 1665, petitioned the General Court in regard to his estate. She afterwards married Robert Clark, of Stratford, Conn .; made her will June 5, 1677, and died in 1682, leaving her property to her children by Stiles.

1. STRONG, Joseph, Esq., of Setauket, L. I., m. Charity, dau. of John Wells, of Stratford, in 1741. He m. afterwards Comfort Nichols. 2. Deborah ; m. David Sterling.
1. SUMMERS, Henry, made his first purchase of land in Stratford the 27th of Ist month, 1668. He seems to have been in company with Samuel Gregory, Sen., who was his brother-in-law, for Samuel Summers, son of Henry, in a deed of land calls Samuel Gregory uncle.
Henry Summers settled in Pequonnock, west side of Pequonnock river, probably on Division street, or the boundary line. He was residing here in 1686, but was in Milford in 1710, when he deeded land to his son John, of Stratfield.
Henry Summers' will is recorded in New Haven, dated Sept. 1, 1713. In it he mentions his wife (but gives her no name), and three sons, and six daughters, as hereafter given.
In it he says: "My will is, that my brother Joseph Wheeler, and my son Samuel Summers be my executors." Joseph Wheeler, son of Lt. Thomas, was residing at the time at Milford, but whether the word "brother" here used means blood or church relation is the question, probably the latter.
