Genealogies.

25. Mr. Samuel, son of Edmund and Judith (Angier) Sherman, came to America with his father when about 14 years of age, and remained at Water- town, Mass., several years. He came to Wethersfield, Ct., probably in 1636, for the following May he was one of the committee, who before the General Court was organized, which declared war against the Pequot Indians, he being then but 19 years of age. Hem., probably. at Wethersfield. Sarah, dau. of Mat- thew Mitchell, and sister of the Rev. Jonathan Mitchell, of Cambridge, Mass., probably in the year 1640. He came to Stratford before 1656, but what year is not known. He was an Assistant or Member of the General Court in 1662, 1663, and 1664. and in 1665 he was appointed one of a committee of six to watch and guard the coast, as a war committee, if the Dutch fleet should make its appearance, as expected, from Stratford to Rye. It is probably for his services in the General Court that he received from the General Court in October, 1664, 250 acres of land, which were finally located in Stratford, nearly opposite Derby Landing. He became possessed of a large quantity of land in Stratford, all of which, nearly, he gave to his children before his de- cease, and he removed from Stratford village to the home of one of his sons on the Toilsome road near the second Stratfield meetinghouse. In a writing dated Nov. 9, 1685, he says, " I, Samuel Sherman, Senr .. now of Fairfield," showing that he was then living on the west side of the Toilsome road in the town of Fairfield. He died at that place, according to his grave-stone inscrip- tion, a fac-simile of which is here given.
