1. Sherwood, Thomas, came from Ipswich, Eng., in the ship Frances, in 1634, aged 48 years, with his wife Alice, aged 47 years. They brought with them four children : Ann, aged 14; Rose, 11; Thomas, 10; Rebecca, 9. They resided several years in Massachusetts and came to Fairfield where he held land before 1650. (The Fairfield records begin in 1649.) In his will dated July 21, 1655, and probated Oct. 25, 1655. he mentions his "well be- loved wife, Mary Sherwood," and all the children here given. He disposes of several pieces of land, all of them lying in Fairfield, and nothing is mentioned as being in Stratford. His sons Stephen, Matthew and Isaac were not twenty years of age. The inventory of his estate was 6372-8-6. His son Thomas owned a dwelling and home lot adjoining his father before the death of the

father, and in his will the father gave a dwelling and home lot to each of bis sons, Stephen and Isaac. His son Thomas was then living in Fairfield, where in 1681 he executed a paper to his son Thomas, Jr., the son being over 21 years of age. Hence this family and the first Stratford family were two distinct families, instead of one.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set to my hand this guh of Novmbr, 1681. Thomas Sherwood." This record shows that this Thomas, Senr., did not die in Strat- ford as supposed, but was now living, having a son some years, probably. over twenty-one years of age ; and hence, also, that the Stratford and Fairfield families were two emigrant families instead of one.

STILES .*

There were two distinct lines of this family in Old Stratford, viz :

1. The Isaac Stiles line, descended from Isaac, the youngest son of John Stiles, one of the four emigrant Stiles brothers of Windsor, Conn .;

2. The Francis Stiles line, descended from " Mr." Francis Stiles, another of the four emigrant brothers of Windsor, Conn.

These brothers were :- I. Henry ; II. John ; III. Mr. Francis; IV. Thomas, who were sons of Thomas, a carpenter of Milbroke, Bed- fordshire, England, and who came over to Windsor in 1635, as narrated in our account of Mr. Francis Stiles. Henry Stiles was accidentally killed by the discharge of a gun, on a General Training Day at Hartford, in 1651. Thomas Stiles, the youngest brother, was rather a wild youth. and went to Flushing. L. I., where he was a first settler and patentee ; lived an irreg- ular life and died, leaving two daughters, only. Thus, the only two brothers who left male descendants were John, of Windsor (father of the Isaac, of Stratford), and Mr. Francis Stiles, of Windsor and Stratford.

THE ISAAC STILES LINE.

1. Isaac Stiles, the third and youngest son of John Stiles (elder brother of Mr. Francis Stiles), the emigrant of Windsor, Conn., was born there;t m.

* This Genealogy, which is confined almost exclusively to the Stiles families of Old Stratford proper, was prepared by Henry R. Stiles, M. D., of New York City, the historian of Old Wind- sor, Conn., and is condensed by him from an exhaustive Genealogy of the Stiles Family in Eng- land and America, which is now (1886) in press, in which work all these lines are carried down to the present day.

t In a journal kept by the Rev. Mr. Sharp, an Episcopalian clergyman in the State of New York, in Lord ('ornbury's administration, dated Jan. 27, 1710, is this entry : "Baptized Isaac Stiles, the first male child born in the Colony of Connecticut. a man of 80 years."-Hasard's Hist. Coll. Lord Cornbury's administration ended in 1709. Gov. Hunter succeeded June, 1710, and in 1711 visited Connecticut and passed through Stratford. His chaplain preached and baptized there, and this was probably the occasion of Isaac Stiles' baptism.

The date given above in Rev. Mr. Sharp's Journal must be read Jan. 27, 1710-11, and if Isaac Stiles was the first born male child in the Colony, he must have been born In 1635, which would have made him 76 and not 80 years old at the time of his baptism. Hon. James Savage, the emi- nent genealogist of New England, takes this view in a MSS. note entered in his copy of the first
