At the breaking out of the Rebellion he was a Major in the Connecticut national guard, and also Judge Advocate of the then military organization of the State. At the per- sonal solicitation of Gov. Wm. A. Buckingham, he recruited a company of cavalry for the war, furnishing the funds therefor from his private resources, and enlisting as a private in the ranks. He declined the command of the battalion of cavalry then raised, but was promoted to a captaincy therein, and as acting Major commanded the same during nearly the whole period of his service. From 1866 to 1869 he was associate editor-in-chief of the " Republi- can Standard," with John D. Candee, Esq. In the latter year he resumed the practice of the law in the city of Bridgeport, and in 1872 was appointed by Chief Justice Chase, of the United States Supreme Court, Register in Bank- ruptcy, for the 4th Congressional District of Connecticut, and continued in that office until the repeal of the National Bankrupt Act, in 1878, when he resumed the practice of his profession, and is still engaged therein, in the city of Bridgeport.

"The first of those who bore the name of Minor or Miner,t was Henry, who lived in the reign of one of the Edwards, of England, at Mendippe Hills, in Somerset, England, and died in 1359.
The name with armorial bearings was given him by King Edward in acknowledgment of his loyal service, in providing an escort for the king on his way to embark for France. History of Stratford.
Richard, apparently was younger than Sergeant Francis, and remained in the King's service while Francis did not, but came to America about 1635 or 6, possi- bly earlier. The title of Sergeant was given him at Stratford and is no indication of his military standing before he came here. In the spelling of the name there is no particular significance as a distinct family, for this name on Stratford records is many times spelled without the h. as Nicols, Nicolls, Nickols, and therefore was probably the same as that of Sir Richard.
