Eunice, Beardsley-the profound jurist, the acute advocate, the eloquent parliamentarian, the dignified, learned' and impartial Judge. "He was the last of the great Judges who presided as Chief of that time-honored tribunal. the Supreme Court of Judicature of the people of the State of New York, and if there is one among them to whom the language of eulogy and even panegyric is due, it is Samuel Beardsley." As to his moral char- acter the Governor says: "I know of no one who contributed more by speech and example, to form and enforce the un- written laws of just moral rectitude. No one did more to elevate the tone of morais in this city, or to keep up the standard of good conduct and just dealings." dau. of Daniel and Elsie Moore Nov. 10, 1784. They had i. Levi, member of the New York Senate, and President of the same body ; and resident at Cherry Val- ley. Il. Samuel, a member of the U. S. Congress and Judge of the Supreme Court in New York State. He was born at Hoosic in Rensselaer County, N. Y., Feb. 6, 1700, but while an infant his parents removed to Monticello in Otsego County where he was reared. He studied medicine for a time, then law and was admitted to the bar in 18:5, located at Watertown, then at Rome and finally at Utica, N. Y. He served many years as Judge. The late Governor Horatio Sey- mour of Utica furnished a sketch for this work from which is taken two extracts : He has one son living, Arthur M. Beardsley of Utica, a prominent lawyer in the State. "Indeed the history of our State would be wanting in one of its chief oanaments, if deprived of the character of Samuel


170. John, 3d, Rev., son of John, 2d, and Keziah (Wheeler) Beardsley, m. Ist, Sylvia, dau. of the Rev. Ebenezer Punderson, first Episcopal missionary at New Haven. ' He was connected with Yale College in 1758, and received the honorary degree of A.B. in 1761, and A.M. from New York College in 1768 ; studied theology with Dr. Johnson at Stratford ; went to England for ordination in the spring of 1761 and returned early the next year as mission- ary to Norwich, Conn. He remained there about five years, then removed to Poughkeepsie, officiating there and at Fishkill ; took refuge in New York City during the Revolution, became chaplain in the British army, and at the conclusion of the war removed to New Brunswick. His descendants became wealthy and very influential lawyers in Canada. (See "Sketch of William Beardsley," by E. E. Beardsley, D.D., 1867).

1. Beardsley, Thomas, was an inhabitant of Milford, where in 1647, it is recorded of him : "Ordered that Thomas Beardsley is not to have any second division." He removed to Fairfield, where he owned a house and lot, and died in or about 1656. His house and lot was sold to Thomas Bassett, and he sold it Nov. 25, 1661, to Richard Bowles.


In the Probate records with his inventory Johannah Beardsley is men- tioned, who was probably his wife.


This Thomas Beardsley may have been a relative of William, one of the first settlers in Stratford.

1. BEERS," James and Richard, brothers, were residing at Gravesend, in Kent, England. James had two sons, James and Anthony, he being a mariner, and died in 1635. The same year his brother, Richard, accompanied by his two nephews, James and Anthony, emigrated to New England and located at Watertown, Mass., where Richard, the uncle, remained and was a prominent citizen, being a Representative to the General Court thirteen years and a captain in the militia service. He was mortally wounded in King Philip's war, at Westfield, Mass., and died Sept. 4, 1675. His descendants are most of them in Massachusetts, and not numerous.


1. James Beers, son of James, of Kent, remained for a time at Watertown, Mass., and then removed to Fairfield, Conn., where some of his descendants now reside, of whom Henry J. Beers is one ; the Hon. Seth P. Beers, late of Litchfield, Conn., deceased, was another. The descendants of James are comparatively few in number.


2. Anthony, son of James Beers, of Kent, was born in England, and was of Watertown, Mass., where five of his seven children were born. He removed to Roxbury, Mass., in 1658, where another child was born, and in 1659 came to Fairfield, Conn., where a daughter was born. He was a mariner and was lost at sea in 1676. His wife's name was Elizabeth.

8. John, son of Anthonyt and Elizabeth Beers, appeared in Stratford with his wife, Mary, about 1677. He united with the Stratford church in 1680, and died in 1682 or 3. He bought a house lot Feb. - , 1677-8, bounded east on the street, west on the burying-place, south by a highway, "four rods wide," north with common land. This highway is the one now leading to the Strat- ford Congregational burying-place.
