"Freeman Curtis, Esq., died in Stratford, Ct., Jan. 5, 1862. The deceased as one of the pioneers and staunch believers of Universal Salvation in this vicinity, can be worthily mentioned in the "Trumpet ;" the columns of which were for a long time a comfort and solace to him. Among the little band of brothers that had built and supported a Universalist Church in this town for a long period, he stood prominent and always distinguished for his faithful, earnest working, and generous devotion of means for the promotion of the Cause. He preached the doctrine of his church no less in practice, by his upright and consistent living, than in theory by his steadfast adherence to his convictions of right. His warmhearted exhortations will abide with his children and friends in blessed memory of his devotedness to truth, and will have a power and influence over them that will never be forgotten or perish. By much reading and meditation, coupled with a vigorous intellect, which he retained to the last, his mind had become enriched with the truths of Holy Writ ; and he knew well the strongholds of his faith. He had drank deeply of the cup of adversity, yet he never ceased trusting implicitly in the good- ness and wisdom of Providence. Through the gloom of these present evil times, he could foresee the clear light of day. His faith was adopted by him in early life, and maintained with ardent zeal and unswerving firmness through- out his long pilgrimage, and amidst the agonizing struggles of a short and fitful sickness, he confidently reposed upon the all-sufficient love of Christ, finding abundant consolation and hope. Reduced in strength by disease, mortality at last gave up the immortal spirit, calmly and sweetly,
" Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch About him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."
In his death, his children lose a wise and sagacious counsellor, society a use- ful and honored member, and the Church an active brother and pure-hearted disciple."

3. Hon. John, son of William - (-) Read, was graduated at Harvard College at the age of 17 years ; began to preach in Waterbury, Ct., in 1698, and was invited to settle there as a minister, and the invitation was twice renewed, but he did not accept, although he continued to preach there until some time in 1699. On the 12th of November, in 1699, he was received into "full communion " in the "First Church " in Hartford, Ct., and preached two years at East Hartford." In the spring of 1703. he was called to Stratford, Ct., as a candidate for settlement, where he remained preaching until March 27, 1707, when he requested to be allowed to close his ministerial labors there.t He was still residing in Stratford on May 13, 1707, when he, with others of Fairfield, purchased a deed of a tract of land, lying above Danbury, of John Mitchell, of Woodbury, paying " 20 ">. cash, 15 penny weight to six shillings." This tract was afterwards named New Fairfield. About 1707, he preached the first sermon ever delivered at New Milford, where he held his residence two or three years, having purchased a large share in that tract (26,000 acres) of land bought of the Indians at that place in 1671 by Henry Tomlinson of Strat- ford. After having continued a law suit for this land about two years, win- ning his case fifteen times and losing on the sixteenth trial, he, in 1710, gave up the fight, and engaged in buying other lands until he had acquired titles to thousands of acres, a large number of which were located at Lonetown, within what afterwards became the town of Redding, spelled often, Reading. He studied law and was admitted an attorney at the bar, October 6, 1708, and in May, 1712, was appointed Queen's Attorney for the Colony of Connecticut, and held the office thereafter several years, with great efficiency. In 1722, he settled in Boston, Mass., where he served a most honorable career as a law- ver, and as Attorney-General of that colony. and where he died Feb. 14, 1748, aged 69 years. He became a communicant in the Episcopal Church, it is said, while in Connecticut, and was such at Kings Chapel, Boston.
