Second Wheeler Family.

1. Wheeler, Thomas, 1st," of Concord, Mass., came to Fairfield in 1644, with the Rev. John Jones and his company.t He was one of the proprietors of Fairfield township, and was a prominent citizen. The existing Fairfield land records began in 1649, and besides his land in the village, recorded to him, it is said : "There was also granted to Thomas Wheeler, the elder, before forty-nine, 17 acres on ye east side of Uncoway Creek in that plat yt was commonly called Bryant's field . .. . bounded on ye east with ye creek or cove," which, it is learned from several other deeds, was where Black Rock village is, and at that place he purchased more land, and his son John after him. Judge Savage errs in saying this Thomas Wheeler was a Lieutenant,

* This Fairfield family is here given by special arrangement with interested parties.

t Some of the first settlers at Fairfield came with their minister, the Rev. John Jones, from Concord, Mass. One of the first records at Concord was a petition for enlargement of the town- ship, dated in 1643, and signed by

"Thomas Wheeler. Ephraim Wheeler. Roger Draper.

Timothy Wheeler. Thomas Wheeler, 'Jr. Richard Lettin."

In another petition, dated May 14. 1645, it is said " a zth or 8th part of the Town had gone to the Southward with Mr. Jones, and many more resolved to go after them." This petition was signed by

" Richard Griffin. George Wheeler.

Joseph Wheeler. John Smedley.

Timothy Wheeler. Thomas Bateman.

Robert Fletcher. Walter Edmonds. William Hunt. William Wood. James Blood. Joseph Middlebrook.

These in the name of the rest."

History of Stratford.

for he (Wheeler) calls his son Thomas Junior Lieutenant. The will of Thomas Wheeler, Senior, was dated Jan. 16, 1653-4, and proved August 23, 1654, and in it he mentions his wife Ann, his "elder son Thomas Wheeler," a daughter -no name-his daughter Sara Sherwood ; four grandchildren, viz : Mary. James, Thomas, and John Bennit, and says : " I make and ordain my son John to be my only executor, and I ordain my well-beloved brother, Thomas Wheeler, Lieut., Robert Lockwood, and Andrew Ward, all of Fairfield, as overseers of this my last will." This last named " Thomas Wheeler" must be an error of the recorder, for Ephraim .Wheeler, since there were not two broth- ers of the same name in one family, and since, also, Thomas, Sen., says Thomas was his " elder son." The will of his widow Ann Wheeler was dated Aug. 21, 1659, and the inventory of her estate taken Oct. 20, 1659 ; and in her will she also mentions " my elder son," Thomas Wheeler. In the deed quoted above, Thomas Wheeler. Sen., is called " the elder," which proves that Thomas Wheeler, the younger, was residing in Fairfield in 1649; also in the first land record made for Thomas Wheeler the first. he is called " Senior."

3. John ; settled at Black Rock.

2. Lieut. Thomas, son of Thomas and Ann Wheeler. of Fairfield, came from Concord, Mass. His wife Joan joined the church at Milford, Ct., apparently, in 1640, and their children, John and Samuel, were baptized there Aug. 16. 1640, yet Thomas Wheeler, Jr., signed a petition in Concord, Mass., in 1643. In 1646. he had a house-lot in Milford, and in 1649 was living in Fairfield, where he was then in possession of a dwelling and several pieces of land. On Jan. 21, 1653, he sold a dwelling-house and house-lot in Fair- field and removed to Stratford, for the next year be accepted 40 acres of land of the Indians at Derby, and the deed says he was of Stratford.

Thomas Wheeler's Deed of Gift :

"This present writing witnesseth that I. Towetanome Sagamore, att pagaset and Raskonate, with ye consent of all Pagaset Indians, Doe frely and fully make from us our Heirs and asigns and Doe freely give a percell of land lying bee Twene Poodertoke River and Naugatuck River, Padertoke River bounding it on the Southwest, Naugatuck River Northeast ; and Bounded on y' northwest with trees marked by ourselves and other Indians ; To Thomas Wheeler of Stratford, his Heirs and asigns for ever quiatly to possess it and doe ffree ye said land from all claims of any indian or indians ; and this afore said land wee doe freely give to the afore said Thomas Wheeler and his Heirss for ever upon condition that hee come to live on it himself ; and if the said Thomas Wheeler seles the said land it must be to such a man as wee like ; in witness here of we have sett toe our hands ; May -, 1657.

This Timothy Wheeler and Ruth Wheeler, witnesses to this deed, were probably husband and wife, of Concord, Mass. The land was what is now Birmingham Point, in Derby, and in 1659 he was residing on it, but sold it in 1664 to Alexander Bryan for {200. On Jan. 4, 1660, he says in a deed, " I. Thomas Wheeler, sell to Richard Booth . . . of the same place . . . . my dwelling-house, lot, barn, and what thereto belongs." In a paper recorded in Stratford in 1659, he says he formerly resided in Fairfield, and owned a farm there on the east side of Uncoway brook. This was at Black Rock. Soon after this he removed to Milford, where he lived afterwards, and was repre- sentative from that town in 1670 and '71, and died Nov. 26, 1672, providing for his wife Joan, his sons John and his daughters; Nathaniel and his wife Esther, who had removed to Newark, N. J., Ephraim, Thomas and Joseph. He mentions his brother William of Stratford and children, William, Thomas and Sarah. His widow Joan died in Jan. - , 1673.

Genealogies.

He owned a large propor- tion of Grover's Hill, at Black Rock, where he resided, and in 1681 paid tax on 1,004 acres of land, he being the third from the highest in the town of Fair- field, and ancestor of William A. Wheeler : for four years Vice-President of the United States. Sergt. John Wheeler died early in the year 1690, leaving an estate, inventoried March 8, 168g-90, at £1566, and widow Elizabeth or Judith. with 13 children. His nuncupative will, pro- bated Aug. 9. 1667, was attested to by Mirable Thompkins and Nathaniel Wheeler. William Wheeler went to Delaware to settle, but died before removing his family. He mentions his wife Sarah, brother Thomas of Mil- ford, and his eldest and youngest son, and daughter, and his sister.
