The following extract from the settlement signed by the heirs of the Hon. John Read, September 2, 1749, recorded on the Probate records of Fairfield, Conn., shows, somewhat, the estate of John Read in lands in Connecticut, the lands which his son John Read received as his proportion of his father's estate, he having already received 43,480. This is interesting as to the history of the settlement of the town of Redding, Connecticut,-the spelling in the agreement being, always, "Reading :"
"Now, Know ye that it is hereby agreed and concluded by and between all the parties hereunto ; and first the said William Read, Nath'' Hunn and Ruth, his wife, Joseph Miller, and Abigail, his wife ; Charles Morris and Mary, his wife, and Deborah Wellstead, for themselves, their Heirs and As- signs, Respectively ; do hereby Covenant and agree to and with y" said John Read that he shall have, hold and enjoy in severalty to himself as his Rights and share in this Division to the Inheritance over and above what has been formerly advanced to him, all the Remainder being two hundred and fifty acres of the Old Farm called Lonetown, the whole containing about 500 acres, being a Grant of the General Assembly of ye said Colony of 200 acres made to Dan" Shelton, 7 of May, 1700, and a Grant of a 100 acres to Richard Hubbel 10 Octobr, 1706, with additions for roughness of land, also a hundred and forty-eight acres and a half of Land in ye Parrish of Reading (including fifteen acres sold to Ebenezer Ferris), Part of a Farm lately laid out there Containing three hundred and seventy-five acres, consisting, partly. of a grant of ye said General Assembly made to Cyprian Nichols, y' 13 of October, 1687, and partly of two hundred acres bought formerly at a vandue

at said Fairfield laid together, and ye whole called the New Farm ; fifty-five acres thereof. including said 15 acres sold Ferris, to be taken at ye south end of ye said Farm, and ninety-three and a half acres at ye Northwesterly part thereof ; allso Chickins' Farm containing about a hundred acres laid in two pieces, for which 200 acres were exchanged at a Place Called Scattacook ; all "* Lands aforesaid lying in ye Parish of Reading in ye said Town of Fair- field ; and allso four Divisions of a hundred acres each and four twenty-five acre Divisions, all laid together, at a Place Called Colburn in ye Lower seven miles of New Fairfield ; and two hundred acre divisions laid together by ye side Bowles swamp, so called in the upper seven miles of said Newfairfield, and a hundred acre Division laid by ye Westerly side of the said swamp ; all the common and undivided land contained in ye grant of Newfairfield belonging to ye estate; also four twenty acre Divisions laid adjoining to ye North Line of a Farm called Hopewell in Newtown ; and twelve acres lying by ye North side of said four 20 acre Divisions, four sixteen acre Divis- ions and fourteen acre Divisions laid North and Northwest of said Hopewell, and three hundred acres ye northerly part of ye said old farm of Hopewell, to be equally Divided Quantity and Quality ; and twenty-four acres laid out in small Divisions in ye sequestered lands and four fifteen acre Divisions last granted to be laid out ; and all ye sequestered common and undivided Lands, in said Newtown belonging to ye estate : all ye aforesaid Lands being in ye said Colony of Connecticut, and also twelve hundred acre Lotts at ye Manner of Peace by Ware River in ye Province of ye Massachusetts to be taken equall in value and goodness with ye rest of the said manner ; all which severall parcels of Land, Buildings, fences and appurtenances allotted and assigned to John Read as beforesaid, including two hundred and fifty acres ye north part of said Lonetown and three hundred and twenty acres laid in several Divisions near ye northeast corner of said Newtown, formerly given to yo said John Read, are accounted and accepted to be of ye value of seventeen thou- sand nine hundred and twenty-two Pounds Old Tenor Bills, being about two seventh Parts or a double share of ye Estate now to be divided."

1. SHERMAN, Nathaniel, son of Mr. Samuel Sherman, had, according to the distribution of his estate, made Feb. - , 1728-9, three daughters : Sarah, Peninah and Naomi Sherman.
1. SHERWOOD. The following record is taken from St. Michael's Parish in London, England :
"Thomas Sherwood, son of Thomas and Alice Sherwood, baptized January 23, 1630."
This, apparently, may have been the Sherwood family that came to Stratford.
1. SKIDMORE, Thomas, was in Cambridge, Mass., as early as 1642 ; went with John Winthrop to Saybrook, Ct., probably ; was in New London, where he owned land. in 1647, and came to Stratford soon after, being the owner of considerable land here in 1651. He was in Stratford in 1659, but not long after removed to Fairfield, where he died, the inventory of his estate

being taken Nov. 15, 1684. Sarah Skidmore, his widow, died within two weeks after him. He had, according to his will, a wife Sarah, a grandchild, John Higby, and one John Skidmore. (See sketch, page 06).

1. WORDIN, Thomas, was in North Stratford, where his wife Jemima united with the Church, August 8, 1731. Thomas Wordin may have been a son of Doctor Nathaniel Wardin, who was in North Stratford when he and his wife united with the Church, Dec. 21, 1718. Doctor Nathaniel soon after removed to Stamford, where his will was proved in 1741, but Thomas is not mentioned in it. Thomas may have been the son of Joseph Wordin of Groton, Ct., who purchased land in Stratford May 30, 1716.
