HARVEY.
A village of 460 inhabitants at the mouth of Chocolay river, in Chocolay township, Mar- quette county, 4 miles southeast of Marquette. The furnace of the Northern Iron Company is located here, but it has been out of blast for several years. Some lumbering is done at this point. Harvey has a semi-weekly mail. L. D. The county seat of Barry county, a pros- perous and growing city of 2,500 inhabitants, in Hastings township, a little north of the geographical center of the county, and on the Thornapple river. It is intersected by the Grand River Valley division of the M. C. R. R., and is 62 miles northwest of Jackson, and 32 southeast of Grand Rapids. It is 138 miles from Detroit, and 46 from Lansing. The place was settled in 1837. and was named in honor of E. P. Hastings, Esq., formerly a well-known citizen of Detroit The railroad was opened to it February 22, 1869. since which its growth has been very rapid. It has fine water power on Thornapple river and Fall creek, and numbers among its manufacturing interests several saw and flour- ing mills, a foundry and machine shop, an agricultural implement factory, a sash, door and blind factory, etc. The sur- rounding country consists of oak open- ings and timbered lands. Grain and pota- toes are the leading agricultural products, and wheat, potatoes, pork, poultry, cattle, etc., the chief items of shipment. Hastings is handsomely laid out and well supplied with churches, schools, etc. Two weekly news- papers, the Banner, Republican, and the Home Journal, Independent, are published here. HAZEL GROVE.
A settlement of about 50 persons in the township of Greenwood, Oceana county, 18 miles west of Newaygo, and 14 east of Whitehall. Holton, 512 miles south, is its nearest railway station. Hazel creek, a branch of the White river, here affords a splendid water power, a head of 16 feet being attainable. There is an extensive saw and shingle mill here, and these articles with wheat are shipped away. Settled 1868. Hazel Grove has a weekly mail. R. W. Skeels, postmaster.

HAZELTON.

A village of Richland township, in the west part of Saginaw county. It is slso a station on the Saginaw Valley & St. Louis R. R., 14 miles west of East Saginaw, and 120 from Detroit. Population 250. HERSEY,
The county seat of Osceola county, is a thriving village of nearly 700 inhabitants in Richmond township, in the southwest corner of the county. It on the line of the F. & P. M. R. R., on the Muskegon river, which is here joined by the Hersey. It is distant from Detroit 184 miles, from East Saginaw 86 miles, from Ludington, the western ter- minus of the road, 52 miles, and it lies 31% miles east of Reed City, the crossing of the G. R. & I. R. R. Hersey was first settled in 1867, and now does a thriving business in the manufacture and shipment of lumber, there being in the immediate vicinity of the village 7 saw and shingle mills. A village situated on the line between Newaygo and Oceana counties, 20 miles northwest of Newaygo and II from Fremont Center, on the Big Rapids branch of the C. &. M. L. S. R. R., its nearest shipping station. Hesperia expects to be a point on the D. L. & L. M. R. R., when that road shall be extended to the lake shore. Settled 1866. Population 350. A station and village situated on the Kalamazoo division of the L. S. & M. S. R. R., in Hopkins township, Allegan county, II miles northeast of Allegan. HILLSDALE,
The city of Hillsdale, the county seat of Hillsdale county, is a thriving place of some 4,500 inhabitants, situated at the junction of the Detroit, Hillsdale & Indiana railroad with the L. S. & M. S. railroad, 91 miles from Detroit, 65 miles from Toledo, and 178 from Chicago.
The county, as the name of the county and town indicates, is richly diversified with hills and dales.
One of the chief interests of the town is the Free Will Baptist college located here, and known as Hillsdale College. This insti- tution, the only one this society, has, was originally located at Spring Arbor; eight miles southwest of Jackson, but was subse- quently removed to this place, where it was formally opened in November, 1855. It is beautifully located on what is now known as College Hill, a tract of 20 acres of land, ly- ing about 100 rods north of the city proper, donated to the society by Mr. Blackmar. During the winter of 1873-4 the college buildings came near being entirely destroyed by fire, only a portion of the east wing hav- ing been saved. The loss was a heavy one, some $60,000 to $70,000, but nothing daunt- ed by their misfortune, the society resolutely set to work to rebuild, on even a grander scale than before, and are (1875) vigorously pushing forward to completion three of the
five distinct edifices hereafter to constitute the college buildings. The institution num- bers between 300 and 400 students, and is under the presidency of Rev. Dewitt C. Dur- gin.
The manufacturing interests of the town are not very extensive, though the chair fac- tory of Crowell & Hubbard is one of the larg- est enterprises of the kind in the State, eui- ploying at times fully 300 hands. There are also 2 foundries and machine shops, a table manufactory and planing, sash, blind and door factory, and an extensive fouring mill.
The St. Joseph river, which passes through the city, has its rise only a couple of miles or so distant, but affords no water power of any account.
The city schools are first-class, consisting of a good union and four ward schools.
The churches consist of a Methodist, Pres- byterian, Catholic, Episcopal, Advent and Free Will Baptist, the latter being the finest church edifice in town. The Baptists have an organization but no building.
