READING.
The village of Reading lies 10 miles south- west of Hillsdale, in Hillsdale county, on the Fort Wayne, Jackson & Saginaw road, 6 miles south of the junction with the Detroit, Hillsdale & Indiana road.
It is claimed to be on one of the highest points of land to be found in the lower penin- sula of Michigan. Streams have their scource in the township, which diverge to the east and west, and finally empty their waters into lakes Michigan and Erie. In fact, it is said that the water falling from the eaves of the dwelling of Mrs. Gates diverge- that from one side swelling the waters of lake Michigan, while that from the other pours into lake Erie.
This is one of the richest farming sections of Michigan, the soil being of a rich, sandy and gravelly loam. Its timber is beech, maple, whitewood, black walnut, oak, etc.
The elevated position of the village of course forbids its having any available water
power. The population of the village is 900. Its manufacturing enterprises include a foundry, a planing mill, a saw mill, a flour- ing mill, a stave factory, a sash, door and blind factory, a glove and mitten factory, a cheese factory, one of the largest in Michi- gan, 2 pump factories and a manufactury of washing machines and wringers, operating on a capital of $60,000.
Reading is claimed to be the heaviest ship- ping point on the Fort Wayne road between Fort Wayne and Jackson.
Its public buildings consist of a good $10,000 union school house, and 4 churches, Presbyterian, Methodist, Freewill Baptist and Baptist. The latter is a new and very tasty little brick edifice, and cost some $10,000.
Among other enterprises Reading is not without its local paper --- the Reading Press formerly the Rough Notes. Settled 1835. Incorporated 1872. Express, American. Telegraph, Atlantic and Pacific. L. S. Par- melee, postmaster.
