IONIA.

Ionia the county seat of Ionia county is a city of 3,251 inhabitants, situated at the inter- section of the D. & M. and D. L. & L. M. railways, 123 miles northwest of Detroit, 34 east of Grand Rapids, and 39 northwest of Lansing. It is beautifully located on the north branch of Grand river, and is noted for its fine residences and costly churches. The river affords no water power at this point. The soil in the vicinity is gravelly, and the surrounding country excellent for every branch of farming.

Ionia was settled by an eastern colony which moved in under the leadership of Samuel Dexter in 1832. Its growth for many years was slow. In 1857 the D. & M. R. R. was completed to this point, and in 1869 the Ionia & Lansing, now part of the D. L. & L. M. R. R. In 1865 the village was incorporated, and four years later it ac- quired a city charter.

The manufacturing interests of Ionia in- clude 2 foundries and machine shops, a woolen factory, a boiler shop, a furniture factory, 2 flouring mills, a pottery, a large brewery, a stave and barrel factory, a planing mill, one saw mill, a sash and door factory, and an extensive brick yard, which turns out a famous white brick, resembling somewhat the well known Milwaukee brick. The shops of the D. L. & L. M. R. R. are also located here.

The public buildings, the jail and county offices, a $35,000 union school building, and 2 ward schools, 8 churches, Methodist (building costing $60,000), Baptist, Presby- terian, Christian, Congregational, Catholic, Dutch Reformed and Episcopal. Just west of the city is now in course of erection the new Intermediate state prison, an institution. designed to relieve the Jackson prison of the less heinous class of offenders.

There are two newspapers published here, Sentinel, republican, and the Standard, democratic. Besides its two intersecting rail- roads, a branch line connects Ionia with Stanton, commanding thereby an immense lumber business. Telegraph, Atlantic & Pacific and Western Union. Express, Ameri- can. M. L. Smith, postmaster.
