A thriving village in the township of Schoolcraft, Kalamazoo county, on the L. S. & M. S. R. R., at the intersection of the C. & L. H. R. R., 13 miles south of Kalama- zoo. It is 29 miles southwest of Battle Creek, 150 miles from Detroit, and 74 from Lansing. It is situated on a beautiful prai- rie 25 miles square. Population about 1, 100. Its manufactures comprise 2 wind-mill fac- tories, a flouring mill and a saw mill. It also has a grain elevator, a national bank, and a weekly newspaper, the Dispatch and News. The surrounding country is slightly rolling, and heavily timbered with pine, hemlock, etc. The principal agricultural productions are grain and potatoes ; the shipments, lum- ber and shingles. SMITH'S CREEK.


A village of 300 inhabitants in the town- ship of Kimball, St. Clair county, on the G. T. R'y, 10 miles south of Port Huron and 48 from Detroit. It contains Methodist Episcopal and Protestant Methodist church- es, but no manufacturing establishments. Its shipments are hoops, staves, cordwood and railroad ties.
