Kalkaska is situated in the central part of Kalkaska county, on the North Boardman river and on the G. R. & I. R. R. It is the seat of justice for the county, and contains six stores, two hotels, a saw-mill and a news- paper office (the Kalkaskian). Hard wood and pine timber abound in this vicinity. A village, known in the vicinity as Maple City, in Kasson township, Leelanaw county. It is 18 miles west of Traverse City, and 12 south of Glen Arbor. Keelerville (also known as Keeler Center) is a village of Keeler township, Van Buren county, 19 miles southwest of Paw Paw, and Io due west of Decatur, on the M. C. R. R., its usual shipping station. The land here- abouts is timbered and adapted to fruit cul- ture. Wheat, pork, wool and fruit are shipped. The village has a population of about 250. It has a tri-weekly mail. A small village containing about 150 in- habitants, situated on the line between Wood- stock township, Lenawee county, and Colum- bia township, Jackson county. It is 1% mile from Woodstock station, on the D. H. &I.R.R. Distance from Adrian 22 miles, from Detroit 72 miles. The country in the vicinity is gently undulating and devoted to agricul- ture. KENDALL,
Sixteen miles west of Kalamazoo, on the K. & S. H. branch of the M. C. R. R., is the thriving little village of Kendall. Though only the outgrowth of the railroad, and dating but from about 1870, it numbers 400 inhabitants, and has a chair factory, a stave factory, a flouring mill, all the property of a company operating on a capital of $100,- 000, and employing in busy times from 75 to Ico hands. There is also a brickyard, saw mill, and planing mill, and a wagon fac- tory. There is also a $3,000 school house, a good Methodist church, and a Presbyterian church prospectively. The soil in the vicin- ity is sandy and productive, and the timber is chiefly oak, though there is some pine. Ken- dall is in Pine Grove township, Van Buren county. Telegraph-Western Union. LA GRANGE.
A village of about 150 inhabitants in La Grange township, Cass county, 4} miles northwest of Cassopolis, and about the same distance southeast of Dowagiac. It derives water power from Dowagiac creek. It is situated in a beautiful diversified country, embracing stretches of oak openings, heavy timber, and prairie. Grain, hops and pota- toes are the staple crops, Flour, woolen cloths, yarns, lumber, and farm implements are manufactured. La Grange has a daily mail. C. C. Welles, postmaster. LAINGSBURGH,
A village with a population of 700, on the J. L. & S. R: R., in Sciota township, Shia- wassee county, 12 miles south of Owosso, and 16 northeast of Lansing. It is situated in a good farming section, though somewhat broken. Grain is the principal item of ship- ment. The village contains three churches, Baptist, Methodist and Congregational ; also a grist mill, a saw mill, and a planing mill.
