A settlement in Mancelona township, An- trim county, containing about 100 population. It is on the G. R. & I. R. R., 148 miles north of Grand Rapids, and 37 south' of Petoskey. MANCHESTER.
The third place in population and impor- tance in Washtenaw county. Located in the southwestern corner of the county in the beautiful valley of the river Raisin, at the intersection of the D. H. & I. R. R. with the Jackson branch of the L. S. and M. S. R. K., 24 miles from Ypsilanti, 54 miles from De- troit, and 51 miles from Toledo. The river affords water power for 2 flouring mills, a saw mill, a woolen factory, wagon and car- riage manufactory, and a foundry and ma- chine shop. Besides these there are two planing mills, and a large brewery run by steam. It has also a large manufactory of perfumes and extracts. Manchester has a weekly newspaper, the Enterprise, two good hotels, a state bank, capital $50.000 ; a large 58
union school building, costing over $25,000 ;. with accommodations for over 300 scholars -;: also a German school and six churches, Meth -- odist, Universalist, Lutheran, Baptist, Pres -- byterian and Catholic. The Riverside Min- eral Springs are considered some of the best in the State. The village is built mostly of. brick and boasts some of the finest business. blocks and residences in the State. The. population of the village is about 2,000. The. inhabitants are about one-half Germans. The products of one of the richest agricul- tural regions of the State are marketed at. this village and the two milroads offer excel- lent competition on freights. Express,. MANISTEE.
The county seat of Manistee county, is a city of 4,894 inhabitants, located in the south- west part of the county, on the shore of lake Michigan and at the mouth of the Manistee river. It is distant from Detroit by rail and
stage via Ludington 270 miles, from Chicago by water 175 miles, from Ludington 31 miles by stage and 25 by boat and is 25 miles south of Frankfort. Manistee wa. first settled about the year 1846 and receive! a city charter in 1869, never having had ans village charter. The character of the sur rounding country is varied, some portions of it being very good for agricultural purposes, the productions being winter wheat of a very good quality, potatoes, corn &c. There is also some fruit raised about here and it is probable that Manistee will shortly export large quantities of small fruits. Lumber in its various forms is the principal article of export, there being about 20 saw and shingle mills in and about the city, most of them being located on an expansion of the river, known as Manistee lake.
There is also a tannery, a sash, door and blind factory, 2 foundries and machine shops, 2 boiler shops, and two weekly news papers, The Manistee Times and the Stand- ard and Times of Manistee. Manistee has suffered from destructive conflagrations dur- ing the past 3 years, but nothwitstanding this fact is a thriving place and growing ra- pidly, and has now several very fine private and public buildings. The Temperance Hall, built by the Women's Temperance As- sociation (a society of ladies organized for the purpose of suppressing intemperance) at a cost of $15,000 is a splendid public hail, with reading room attached and is one of the finest buildings on the east shore of lake Michigan north of Grand Haven. There being no railroad facilities, Manistee has a. yet no express line doing business here, The Western Union telegraph has an office here. L. S. Ellis, postmaster.

The village has four dry goods and 2 grocery stores, 2 hardware stores, 2 drug stores, a saw mill, a planing mill, a grist mill, an iron foundry, and 2 churches, Con- gregational and Methodist. A postoffice in Grand Traverse county, on the point of land which separates the east- ern and western arms of Traverse bay. It is 12 miles north of Traverse City and has a :semi-weekly mail.

A village claiming 500 inhabitants, in Maple Valley township, Montcalm county. It is on the D. L. & L. M. R. R., 157 miles from Detroit and 7 east of Howard City. MARCELLUS.
A village of about 400 inhabitants, in the township of the same name, in Cass county. It is on the C. & L. H. R. R., 85 miles from Lansing and 13 northeast of Cassopolis. It is the center of a level farming country of which wheat is the staple article of shipment.
