JONES.

A station on the M. C. R. R. air line, 78 miles west of Jackson, and 1I east of Casso- polis. It is in Newburgh township, Cass county. The postoffice is known as New- burgh. (See Newburgh.)

JONESVILLE.

A thriving village on the main line of the L. S. & M. S. R. R., in Hillsdale county, 5 miles west of Hillsdale. It is also the point from whence the Lansing branch diverges, and likewise the crossing of the Ft. W. J. & S. R. R. It is 95 miles from Detroit, 71 from Toledo, 173 from Chicago, 25 southwest of Jackson and 59 south of Lansing. It is finely located amid an excellent farming sec- tion of country, is an energetic thriving busi- ness place, and has a population of over 2,500.

The chief manufacturing enterprises are the large woolen mills of H. R. Gardner & Co., and the cotton milis owned and operated by a stock company. These institutions employ each a large force of hands, and have resulted in a large accession to the population, and have had much to do with the present pros- perity of the town. Of other manufacturing enterprises, as mills, carriage shops, marble shops, foundries, etc., it has its full share for a place of its size. The St. Joseph river furnishes abundant water power. Its public buildings consist of a first-class school house and 4 churches, Methodist, Baptist, Presby- terian and Episcopal, and one public hall.

It supports one good weekly newspaper, the Independent. Jonesville was settled about 1832 or 1833, and at an early day was the county seat of Hillsdale county. Robert A. Sinclair, postmaster.

KALAMAZOO.

The largest village in Michigan, Kalama- zoo having always refused a city charter. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo county, and is on the main line of the M. C. R. R., 144

miles west of Detroit and 140 east of Chica- go. It is the point of divergence of the Kalamazoo & South Haven branch, and is intersected by two roads running north and south-the Grand Rapids & Indiana, and the Kalamazoo division of the L. S. & M. S. R. R. It is thus as a railroad center sur- passed only by Detroit and Grand Rapids and is equalled only in this State by Jackson. It is 48 miles south of Grand Rapids, 39 miles east of the lake Michigan shore at South Haven, 37 miles north of White Pigeon, and 35 north of Sturgis. It is beau- tifully situated on the Kalamazoo river, and has the reputation of being one of the most charming places in Michigan.

Kalamazoo has a population claimed to be about 10,000. It is chiefly famous as being the location of the State Insane Asylum, Kalamazoo College, a Baptist educational in- stitution, the Michigan Female Seminary,

MICHIGAN FEMALE SEMINARY.

an institution under Presbyterian auspices, and the Kalamazoo Business College, a popu- lar institution under the management of W. F. Parsons, also as being the market fora wealthy agricultural region, and for its fine stores and private residences, and in ger.eral for the cul- ture, enterprise and wealth of its inhabitants. Its main street is unsurpassed by but few even in cities of much superior size.

It has three incorporated banks-the First National, capital $100,000; the Michigan National, capital $100,000; and the Kala- mazoo City Bank, capital $60,000. Promi- nent among its manufacturing enterprises are a large paper mill, an agricultural implement factory operating on a $200,000 capital, the Kalamazoo Emery Wheel Co., and a num- ber of industrial establishments of lesser magnitude.

The Insane Asylum is very extensive and complete-in fact is a model institution, both in its appointments and management. It

numbers 528 inmates, and costs for annual maintenance $114,000. The college is in a prosperous condition, and numbers 177 stu- dents. It is under the presidency of Rev. Kendall Brooks. The Michigan Female Seminary, also known as the Mt. Holyoke Seminary, from its being modeled after the famous institution of that name in Western Massachussetts, is perhaps unsurpassed in the west as a training school for young ladies. It has about 70 students on its rolls. Of course its public schools are not neglected. Kalamazoo has 3 public libraries-the Pub- lic Library proper, with 4,024 volumes on its shelves, the Ladies' Library, with 2,600 vol- umes and with a suit of rooms handsomely fitted up, and the Young Men's Library, with 1.784 volumes.

Kalamazoo has one daily newspaper-the Telegraph, republican, and the Gazette, a dem- ocratic weekly. The Michigan Free Mason, a Masonic monthly, is also published here.

It has 13 churches, to-wit : I Presbyterian, I Methodist, I Baptist, 2 Congregational, 2 Episcopal, I Unitarian, I Lutheran, I Dutch Reformed, I Catholic, and 2 colored churches -- Methdist and Baptist.

Kalamazoo was originally settled in 1829, and was at first called Bronson, from its founder, Titus Bronson. In 1836 its name was changed to that of the river upon which it is situated, an Indian appellation signify- ing "boiling pot." In 1846 (Feb. 2) the Michigan Central was opened to Kalamazoo, and for some time this remained its western terminus. Its other railroads are all of com- paratively recent date. L. B. Kendall, post- master.
