ROMEO.
The village of Romeo, though not the county seat, is the principal town of Macomb county, in the northern part of which it is located, on the line between Bruce and Washington townships, and on the Chicago & St. Clair railroad, 14 miles west of Ridgeway. It claims a population of 2,500, and is sur- rounded by a splendid farming country.
The soil is gravelly and well adapted for the construction of good streets at a moder- ate expense. Romeo has become well known to the sporting world through its an- nual and well-attended horse fairs, having here one of the very best half-mile tracks in the State. The public buildings consist of a central union and two primary school buildings (all of wood), and Methodist, Christian, Congregational, Episcopal, Bap- tist, and Lutheran churches. The Metho- dist church, which is a new one, is one of the finest in the interior of the State, having cost some $40,000. The Romeo Observer, a well-conducted local sheet, is the only. paper published here. The manufacturing interests of Romeo include (in and close around the village), 4 flouring. mills, 4 car- riage factories, a planing mill, 2 foundries, a machine shop, an agricultural implement fac- tory, and extract and perfumery works. There are also 2 banks. The leading ship- ments from Romeo consist of flour, grain, pork and potatoes. The village was platted in 1834, incorporated in 1838, and secured an outlet by railroad in 1870. Telegraph -- Western Union. Express-Canadian. M. Thompson, postmaster.
