LAPEER,
The county seat of Lapeer county, a thrifty young city of 2,887 inhabitants, situated at the intersection of the Chicago & Lake Hu- ron, and the Detroit & Bay City railroads, 60 miles from Detroit, 45 from Port Huron, 20 from Flint, and 48 from Bay City. A branch of the D. & B. C. R. R. here diverges to Fish Lake, 5 miles distant.
The site of the village was taken up by A. N. Hart, in 1831, and the village platted by him in 1833. In 1836 the county was or ganized, and Lapeer became the county seat. In 1860 it received a village charter, and in 1868 became a city. In 1871 it se- cured a railway outlet via Port Huron, and in 1872 was tapped by the D. & B. C. R. R. LA SALLE.
A small village on the L. S. & M. S. R. R. and C. S. R. R., in La Salle township, Monroe county, 5 miles south of Monroe. At an early day La Salle promised to become a place of considerable importance, but trade has flowed into other channels and left it a stranded village, so to speak. Except for the business created by some three or four saw mills, it would have no interests worthy of mention. It has 3 churches, but all pas- torless. W. H. Kief, postmaster. BUSINESS DIRECTORY.

coal burning. with some farming, are the principal industries. Settled in 1864. Tele- graph, Northwestern. Azel Lathrop, post- master.
LAWRENCE.
A lively village of Van Buren county, situa- ted in the township of the same name, on the Paw Paw river, 9 miles due west of the village of Paw Paw, and 6 east of Hartford, which is its nearest railway station. It was first settled in 1837, incorporated as a village in 1869, and now numbers about 1,oco in- habitants.
