SAGINAW.
Commonly known as Saginaw City, the county seat of Saginaw county, an incorpo- rated city of 10,064 inhabitants, situated on the west branch of the Saginaw river, 18 miles above its mouth. It is 100 miles from Detroit, 64 from Lansing and 2 above East Saginaw which is on the opposite side of the river. The J. L. & S. R. R. passes through the business portion of the city by which line Saginaw is distant 36 miles from Owosso, 64 from Lansing and I01 from Jackson. The F. & P. M. R. R. passes within a short distance of the northern boundary of the city and the S. V. & St. L. R. R. extending 36 miles due west into the interior opens an ex- tensive region to the trade of Saginaw.
The city fronts on the river some 4 miles and has an average depth of 2 miles. A street railway connects it with East Saginaw and the river is crossed by three substantial swing bridges. Washington street, a fine avenue, extends from a point opposite East Saginaw through the whole length of the city, parallel with the river. Between this street and the river are the hotels, stores, mills, and business places generally. On the other (the west) side, are situated the court house square and county buildings, most of the churches, school buildings and residences. The city has a splendid central school building, with five ward school houses, and a well organized public school system. The churches are, the German Lutheran, the Presbyterian, the Catholic, the Episcopal, the Methodist, the Baptist, the Reformed Lutheran, and a Free Church. The Taylor House, a first-class hotel, and a number of large and elegant brick business blocks are worthy of mention. Holly water works, erected at a cost of $100,000, supply the city with water. There is a Young Mens' Chris- tian Association and various Masonic and Odd Fellows' lodges, also two weekly news- papers, the Saginawian, democratic, and the Saginaw Valley News, republican. There are 2 banks (one National), some 8 or 10 large saw mills, and as many salt manufac- tories, a foundry and machine shop, a flour- ing mill, a boiler shop, a planing mill, a stave factory, a sash and door factory, and
various other manufacturing enterprises more or less extensive, all of which give em- ployment to 1,500 hands or more. Saginaw has also an immense trade in furnishing supplies to the lumber regions north and west. Large lake vessels ascend the river to this point, and load at docks directly in the heart of the city.
Various attempts have been made to con- solidate East Saginaw with Saginaw City, and thereby erect, under a single municipal government, a city of between 25,000 and 30,000 inhabitants, but local jealousies have hitherto stood in the way. These will no doubt in tinte be overcome, and Saginaw will vie with Grand Rapids for the position of second city in Michigan in population and importance.
The history of Saginaw dates back to 1819, when Gen. Cass here negotiated an important treaty with the Indians by which a large tract was ceded to the government. Two years later a military post was estab- lished at this point. In 1822 Dr. Charles Little entered the land embracing the pres- ent site of the city, and a village was started. It was 1841 before a wagon road was opened to Detroit, and 20 years more before railroad communication was estab- lished. James A. Hudson, postmaster.
