WHITEHALL.
Whitehall is prettily located on the east shore of White lake, in the northern part of Muskegon county, 5 miles from lake Michigan, and 14 miles north of Muskegon. White lake is a beautiful sheet of water, 5 miles in length by one or two in breadth, formed by a widening of White river near its mouth, and it affords one of the safest and best harbors on that shore. Prior to 1870 this lake was closed to navigation on account of the shallow water at its mouth, but a congressional appropriation of $112,000, with $20,000 additional of private capital, opened a new channel to the lake of sufficient depth to admit the largest steamers. On the banks of White lake there are located 25 steam saw mills, having an aggregate capacity of 100,000,000 feet of lumber, 30,000,000 shingles, and 15,000,000 lath. The C. & M. L. S. R. R. passes through Whitehall, via which the place is 28 miles south of Pentwater, and 142 north of New Buffalo. It was platted in r$59, and originally called Mears. In 1867 its name was changed to Whitehall, and it was incor- porated. It now numbers some 1,500 in- habitants. It has 5 churches, a graded school employing 5 teachers, a bank, a weekly newspaper, the Forum, a tannery doing a business of $100,000 a year, 9 saw and 4 shingle mills. The building improve- ments made during 1874 alone reached
