HOWELL.
The county seat of Livingston county, is a pleasant village lying nearly in the center of the county, and on the D. L. & L. M. R. R., 32 miles from Lansing, and 53 from Detroit. A population of some 2,500 is claimed. Howell is located in one of the richest wheat-growing sections of the State, the crop in good seasons ranging from 20 to 40 bush- els per acre. One mile north of the village a pretty fair water power is obtained by dam- ming the outlet of Thompson's lake, on which are situated the flour and saw milis of Wilcox & Skilbeck. The principal manufacturing establishment is the large foundry and ma- chine shop, and agricultural implement factory of Wykoff, Clark & Immen. In addition to this institution there are a sash, door and blind factory, and a steam flouring mill. The public buildings consist of the usual county buildings, which are of a good qual- ity, 3 churches, Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian, and a $32,000 union school building. In addition to the usual organi- zations of Masons and Odd Fellows, there is a large and flourishing lodge of Grangers. The local press is represented by the Liv- ingston Republican and the Democrat. The village was laid out in 1835, though the first settlers came in 1828. In 1863 it was incorporated. The railroad was opened to it in 1871. Express, American. Tele- graph, Atlantic and Pacific. W. W. Ken- yon, postmaster.
