JACKSON.

The city of Jackson, the county seat of Jackson county, is situated on the M. C. R. R., 76 miles west of Detroit, 208 east of Chica- go, and 37 southeast of Lansing. It is, next to Grand Rapids and Detroit, the greatest railroad center in the State, roads diverging from it in seven different directions. These

include the M. C. R. R., east to Detroit and west to Chicago; the Air Line, reuniting with the main line at Niles; the Ft. W. J. & S. R. R., south to Fort Wayne, Ind .; the L. S. & M. S. R. R., southeast to Adrian and Toledo; the G. R. V .. branch of the M. C. R. R., northwest to Grand Rapids, and the J. L. & S. branch to Lansing and Sagi- naw.

The city had a population, according to .the census of 1874, of 13,860, but it is claimed now (1875) to be fully 16,000. Its business interests are among the heaviest in the State.

MANUFACTURES.

Its extensive railroad facilities, together with its coal mines, four of which are now operated, afford it great advantages as a manufacturing center. An estimate recently made of the extent of its manufacturing in- terests is shown in the following table :

Yearly Products.

Two agricultural implement facto- ries .. $450,000 Eight wagon and carriage factories 800,000

Four furniture factories .... 340,000

Three foundries and machine shops. 1,650,000

One car factory

500,000

One handle factory 25,000

Three coopering establishments ... 50,000

Five planing mills 300.000

Two plaster mills 50,000

One sewer pipe factory 50,000

One pottery. 25,000

Two brick yards 40,000

One cigar factory.

50,000

Aggregate about .$6,330,000

Besides all these the principal car. shops of the M. C. R. R. and branches are located here, the works being very extensive, and including a round house with a capacity for 54 engines. These give employment to a large number of hands.

TRADE AND SOCIAL ADVANTAGES.

An estimate of the trade of Jackson shows : Annual

Sales.

Ten boot and shoe houses $500,000 Seven dry goods houses 1,400,000 Forty grocery houses. 1,600,000

Five clothing houses, 360,000 Two crockery houses 100,000 Eight drug houses 160,000

Three music and musical merchan-

dise houses

177,000

Annual Sales,

Eight hardware houses. $360,000 Four millinery and fancy goods houses 400,000

Aggregate not less than $4,880,000 Jackson has 4 incorporated and 2 private banks. These are :

The First National, capital $100,000

The People's National, capital. 100,000 The Jackson County Bank, capital 250,000 Jackson City Bank, capital. 100,000 There are two daily newspapers, the Citi- zen, republican, and the Patriot, democratic, also the People's Champion, a weekly tem- perance paper.

In the way of churches and schools no city of its size in the State has more to boast of. Of the former there are 4 Baptist, 2 Congregational, 3 Methodist Episcopal, 2 Independent Methodist, I Evangelical Asso- ciation, 1 Christian, 2 Protestant Episcopal, I German Lutheran, I Adventist, I Catholic and I Jewish Synagogue. The school sys- tem comprises 2 large union schools and 8 ward schools, also a German Lutheran school and a business college. Number of scholars in attendance, 3,827. Teachers, 49. The Young Men's Library contains about 4,000 volumes.

There are many excellent business struc- tures and two fine hotels, the Hibbard and Hurd houses. A cut of the former (which does not do the building justice), may be seen on the following page. Both are well kept hotels, the Hibbard house being first- class in every particular.

The city is lighted with gas and supplied with water by the Holly system.

THE STATE PRISON.

The Michigan State Prison is located here, and for its admirable management deserves mention, being in no wise behind the other State institutions in their acknowledged per- fection. At the close of the last prison year, Sept. 30, 1874, there were 703 con- victs confined in the institution. Only 450 were employed on contract work, for which the State received an average of 6434 cents per day. The rest have been employed in improving the prison property. Notwith- standing the great number of men not em- ployed on productive labor, the prison earned in excess of its expenditures, $10,255.14. The prisoners are treated with the greatest humanity possible, and the lash was not used during the year in a single instance.
