NEW BUFFALO.
New Buffalo is the most southwesterly vil- lage of Michigan. It is in New Buffalo township, Berrien county, and is on the shore of lake Michigan, at the mouth of Ga- lien river. It is a station on the M. C. R. R., and is the southern terminus of the C. & M. L. S. R. R. New Buffalo is 66 miles from Chicago, 218 from Detroit, and is 27 west of Niles. Population between 800 and 1000. New Buffalo was settled in 1834 and for some time was the western terminus of the M. C. R. R., a line of boats connecting it with Chicago. It is situated at the western junction of the main and air lines, and at the junction of the South Bend branch. It is 93 miles east of Chicago, 179 west of Detroit, and 10 miles north of South Bend, Ind. It is on the St. Joseph river, at the head of navigation, and possesses a water power surpassed but by few places in this State.
The population of Niles, according to the census of 1874, was 4,588, but it has the ele- ments of prosperity in a large degree, and may be expected to double or treble within a few years.
The enterprise of this city is seen in its gas works, its fine rows of business houses, and its large iron bridge connecting the western side of the river with the main town. Though not the county seat, Niles is by far the largest and most important town in the county of Berrien. Its manufacturing interests are numerous, including 5 large fouring mills, 4 carriage and wagon shops, one employing 60 hands, a furniture com-

Eight churches, Presbyterian, Episcopa- lian, Methodist, Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, and two colored churches, Methodist and Baptist, afford a sabbath home for church going people.
