MON AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY. MON

MONTAGUE.

The beautiful village of Montague is sit- uated in Muskegon county, 17 miles north of the city of Muskegon, and about 6 miles from the Michigan shore, and on, the north bank of White lake, a picturesque sheet of water of some 7 miles in length by an aver- age of two miles in width; it is navigable the entire length for the largest of lake ves- sels.

Montague has a population of 1,356, accord- ing to the State census of 1874, and is a live enterprising town of but eight years standing. It has already attained a considerable impor- tance as a lumber manufacturing point, there being located in Montague proper 7 saw. mills, and 2 shingle mills, while on the south shore of White lake, the suburbs of Mon- tague, there are fifteen or twenty more, making a total of some thirty mills having an aggre- gate capacity of about 100,000,000 feet of lumber per season.

The citizens are ensuring the future suc- cess of the town by the introduction of man- ufacturing establishments. This interest is already quite large, and is steadily increas- ing. Under this head comes a large sash, door and blind factory, the Montague iron works, a curtain stick, slat and map mount- ing factory, a steam flouring mill, a boiler shop, and a wagon manufactory.

Many of the citizens are turning their at- tention to fruit growing with good success, the peaches being of as fine a flavor as those of the St. Joseph region. There are three peach orchards, of about 5,000 trees each, under an advanced state of cultivation. These shipped in 1874 over 5,000 baskets of peaches. In addition to the above an orchard of 10,000 trees was to be set out in the spring of 1875. This region, it is be- lieved, is destined to become, at no distant day, the center of the great fruit growing belt of Michigan.

The lumber, manufacturing products, crops, etc., are easily placed upon the Chi- cago, Milwaukee, eastern and interior mar- kets by means of the Engleman Transpor- tation Company, and the C. & M. L. S. R. R., both of which lines make Montague a point.

The buildings completed and commenced during the season of 1874 foot up an aggre- gate value of $144,000, among which is the Franklin House, built at a cost of $30,000 ; the German Lutheran church, erected at an expense of $8,000 ; the Presbyterian church. at $10,000, still unfinished ; the public school house, $15,000, still unfinished ; Lorenson's opera house, and the Presbyterian parsonage, and a score of other buildings.

Of course the town boasts a newspaper- The Montague Lumberman, the only paper

in Muskegon county printed entirely at home.

Montague is one of the liveliest of the many live towns of Western Michigan, and has a promising future before it. Telegraph -- Western Union. Express --

MORGAN.

Morgan is a village of some 700 inhabi- tants, and is located upon the line of the Marquette, Houghton & Ontonagon railroad, 7 miles west from Marquette, and 5 miles east of Negaunee. It is the most pleasant location upon the line of the railroad. and is the site of the well known Morgan furnace, from which it derives its name. This fur- nace was built in 1863, and has been the most successful enterprise of the kind in this region, having paid for itself in the first four months of its run. The iron from it is and has been the standard for all other lake Superior charcoal irons. The Morgan, to- gether with the Champion furnace, which was burned in 1874, was projected and built under the immediate supervision of C. Donkersley, its President and Treasurer, and who now operates the same under lease. Connected with the furnace is a bloomery. where charcoal blooms are made in quality equal, and, for many purposes, superior to the famous Swedish and Norway iron.

In every respect these works are most com- plete, having their own foundry, machine, blacksmith, and carpenter shops. The pro- duct of the Morgan furnace amounts to about 6,000 tons of pig iron annually. Noth- ing but iron and a little lumber is shipped. The surrounding country is hilly, and very much broken. Express, American. Tele- graph, Northwestern. Wm. E. Perry, post- master.

The county seat of Macomb county, a flourishing incorporated village on the Clin- ton river and Grand Trunk railway, 23 miles northeast of Detroit. It has a popu- lation of about 2,600, and is probably in as thrifty a condition as any other place in east- ern Michigan. Within the short space of six months in 1874, as many as 125 buildings were erected, and property is rapidly advanc- ing in value. The manufacturing interests of Mount Clemens include a saw mill, salt works, a foundry, a woolen mill, a tannery, 3 carriage factories, 2 barrel factories, 2 brew- eries, etc. A mineral well here is reported to work wonders in the cure of rheumatic affec- tions, and a new and commodious hotel and bath house are on the point of being erected for the convenience of visitors. The village has Episcopal, Presbyterian, Methodist, Bap- tist, Catholic and Lutheran churches, and first-class school accommodations. There are two newspapers, the Monitor and the

Press. The village was settled in 1818, and was named after Christian Clemens, one of its pioneers. Express-Canadian ; Telegraph --- Western Union. Jas. H. Shook, post- master.
