THREE RIVERS.

Though not the county seat, Three Rivers is the leading town of St. Joseph county. It has a population of 4,000. It takes its name from the fact that it is located at the junction of the Portage, Rocky and St. Jos- eph rivers, which the improvements have made one of the best water powers in the country, Here, as in nearly every portion of southwestern Michigan, the quality of the soil is unsurpassed.

THR

THR AND BUSINESS DIRECTORY.

The town is located at the intersection of the Kalamazoo division of the L. S. & M. S. R. R. and the M. C. R. R. air line, 12 miles north of White Pigeon and 25 south of Kala- mazoo, 145 miles from Detroit and 127 from Chicago.

Three Rivers had railroad connection with the Southern road some 20 years ago, but proving unprofitable, the track being worn out, was taken up, and Three Rivers again became an inland town only as it was con- nected with Niles and St. Joseph by a small steamboat. The old road was suc- ceeded by the Gardner road, which was sub- sequently sold to L. S. & M. S. R. R.

The extensive water power of Three Rivers gives it a great advantage as a manu- facturing town. The principal enterprises of this nature are a mill, with $150,000 capi- tal stock, giving employment to some 30 to 50 hands, an extensive vibrator threshing machine and agricultural implement factory, the Three Rivers manufacturing company, with a capital stock of $50,000. This com- pany are runuing a foundry and machine shop, and making a specialty of an elevated railroad sawing machine, a parallel gang- edger and a gang lath mill, four pump fac- tories, 3 flouring mills, a saw mill, 3 carriage and wagon factories, a corn sheller and smut machine factory, 2 planing mills, sash and blind factories and fruit drying establish- ments.

Three Rivers also has its mineral springs, said to possess mineral properties well cal- culated to restore the victims of rheumatism and dyspepsia to soundness again.

The public buildings consist of two good union and one ward school building, giving employment to some 16 or 18 teachers, and 7. churches-Presbyterian, Episcopal, Method- ist Episcopal, Lutheran, Baptist, Protestant Methodist and Reformed-several of which are very fine edifices. The Reporter and Herald furnish the local reading. Wilber H Clute, postmaster.

TRAVERSE CITY.

. Traverse City is the county seat of Grand Traverse county. It has a population of about 1,500, and is situated at the head of the west arm of Grand Traverse bay, and at the mouth of the Boardman river, which fur-

nishes a first-rate water power at this point. The village is in Traverse township, in the northwest part of the county, and is reached by both rail and water. There are several lines of stages diverging from it to the vari- ous towns around. Traverse City is distant from Detroit 269 miles, from Grand Rapids 140 miles, and is about 40 miles east of Frank- fort, on the shore of lake Michigan. It has enjoyed railway facilities but a short time, the Traverse City branch of the G. R. & I. R. R. having been completed and put in operation only since Jan. 1, 1873. * The place was first settled in 1851, and now contains one large saw mill, an extensive flouring mill, both owned by Messrs. Hannah, Lay & Co., the founders of the village, who have here also an extensive general store. There are also a foundry and machine shop, a planing mill and sash factory, the usual complement of stores and shops, and two enterprising and well conducted weekly newspapers -- the Traverse Bay Eagle and the Grand Traverse Herald.
